Jake's only offer was us. Rothlesburger didn't start on his HS team until he was a senior. I know this. If he is on our team. We will have at least one quarterback who can hit the side of a barn.

Seems to be a great kid, but he certainly isn't an FBS prospect today. Had he had more than one season as a starting QB under his belt, I would think his interest would be greater. Many seem to equate his size and numbers to Cole Kelley. Kelley was physically more developed and has a stronger arm; their height is the only similarity I see between the two.

So he isn't getting offers from USM, and LTU? Both schools with more football success, better QB play.

If you're going to offer a preferred walk on while your direct competition offers a full ride to a local hero you'd better be right.

I've never seen Cox play, but sounds like he may be similar to Brady Thomas. Tall and skinny but strong arm considering his size. Is that accurate comparison??

A former Coach on Bustle's staff once shared with me...."Every now and then you take one or two local player and develop them even if he doesn't necessarily want that kid....even if it may take 3 years to get a return on the investment from the athlete.

He also shared good reasons to do so.

1. He said if this particular player goes on and has a great career at ULM,Tulane or McNeese....that would be an indictment on our coaching staff.

2. It keeps the doors open in the local high schools and continues to foster good relationships with local coaches.

3. It keeps busts in the seats as compared to a kid from another state.

After 3 years if it doesn't work out, cut the kid and the university was not at a total loss.

This is where HUD may have missed in his first two years. I know he's a Mississippi guy, but we let a lot of local kids go because of his unwillingness to develop players.

----I am not denying what you posted, but rather inquiring because I don't know---Can you give some example names? I am not talking about those that were offered and chose not to go to Louisiana!!!

He was talking about Caleb Rubin. The running back from Lafayette High. He was a smaller back, but not a back that fit UL's profile at the time. The kid had a great career at Lafayette High and the staff was on the fence about bringing him in, but as stated before if he went on and had a great career at ULM, Tulane or McNeesee it would be egg on the face of the coaching staff. So they took him and it all worked out. I must give credit to Bustle staff to have the foresight to say let's see what the kid gives us in three to four years. There's nothing wrong with doing this for a local kid. If they were doing this for a kid from Houston or Mississippi I would question it.

I think there is more upside to giving Cox a scholarship as compared to not giving him a scholarship.


Think about a kid like Quinten Lawrence. That kid killed it at McNeese. No one can tell me that kid would not have made the receiver rotation at UL.

It wasn't race baiting. If folks saw the video in nov and think that behavior was a one day deal then their head is in the sand. It may be different music and not videoed but that behavior is a daily occurrence in that place. Therefore it is not a pleasant environment for all. It is hard to use words to describe it and not sound racial. However I don't want to make it about race and more about the actions of some and what appears to be a lack of discipline and lose of control.

If we are taking out the particular song and the video aspect of that situation, I'd suggest that the behavior we saw in that video goes on in MANY locker rooms around the country. Again, we are removing that particular song and the fact it was videoed, so we are talking about a bunch of college kids playing music loudly in the locker room and dancing around and singing the lyrics. I just don't know where there is room for that in this society....

Now that AJ won't be using a scholarship, offer COX a full ride, Red Shirt him, then see what kind of weight he puts on in a year, and knowledge of game, with his arm and athleticism who knows how good he can be!!!!!

If every kid red shirted and made the squad we'd have to reduce scholarships per year even further. We'd have over a hundred on the team. This will be a big miss. Probably too late to undo the damage. Signed and doesn't live up to hype a small miss.

I'd take both him and Griffin Hebert. But that's just me. I'd look for Cox to be the guy as a R-Jr.
