Interesting comparisons between LA, stAte, UTA and Minnesota. Arlington lost by 17 to them on the game after we lost by 12. Now stAte played and lost by 7 to the Golphers in the game preceding playing us.
The only thing I'm taking from these mutual opponents is that the games should be a dog fight. Nobody has distanced themselves from comparable opponents.
The book on beating us is pretty simple, but it's not simple to pull off. You have to contain Devin Carter, which means keeping Dante Thomas from penetrating and kicking out to open shooters. You have to take advantage of our 4 guard lineup and get the only 2 forwards we have on roster in foul trouble using Washington.
One of the X Factors here is playing at home. We played a SWAC style OOC schedule this year. Only 3 Home games, and have not been at home since Thanksgiving. There's no way of knowing what the crowd will look like, and no way of knowing how we'll react to finally being back at home.
This will be a telling game for both teams. The Cajuns have surpassed my expectations after losing Long. Bartley has been a huge addition and can really score and defend. Washington has been huge inside. Arkansas State is off to a great start under new coach Grant McCasland, a former Baylor assistant who coached Midland College to a JC national title and Midwestern State to the D2 Elite Eight twice. The Red Wolves won at Georgetown and beat Chattanooga and Lehigh (both favored to win their leagues). They have several quality, versatile guards, defend well and can shoot it from the outside.
McCasland inherited some all-conference guards in Carter and Thomas and a shooter in Kern. Simms was a JC All-America guard & Lindsey has been solid guard as a JC transfer. McCasland also brought in their top bigs, a 6-7 junior (Bruce), 6-8 freshman (Boudie) and 6-4 freshman (Simmons). They have a bunch of long, active guys between 6-3 and 6-7 and only one post taller than 6-8 and one at more than 210 pounds.
