LSU vs Ole Miss has always been the big rivalry for both teams. Much more history of both being good teams playing at the end of the season than Ole Miss vs Miss State.

Remember, Billy Cannon's punt return was against Ole Miss.

thanks I didn't know... but that is LSU's view, the answer would be how is it viewed by Ole Miss? Same with our situation..... if we declare Ark st who might they see as an alternative? I don't think s.alabama has anyone else nor does ULM (but I would like to get away from it being ULM for other reasons esp name) .....a rivalry has to be a two way street. LSU could claim Florida is their rival all day long, (just like they claimed fisher wanted to go to b.rouge).....but Florida will never care more about LSU than the world's largest cocktail party or gators-noles

Full disclosure, I went into this little project with my mind made up that the answer was Arkansas State ... and my opinion hasn't changed.

But as you peel back layer after layer, it becomes very obvious that the question is an even better one than I realized.

    Conference Rival: ASU and USA
    State Rival: LaTech

Back then, we really had no football rival. Today, that is stAte. Definitely lots of bad blood back and forth here.

Still, nothing compares to the rivalry we will have with Tech once we play every year again.
i guess that would be exception to only having one, maybe have two... one you hate (maybe ULM or La Tech) and then have one that is simply competitive and fun competition (maybe ark st - if this episode that happened this yr fizzles??)

As a long time fan, the team in conference that is the biggest rival across the board in all sports is South Alabama. stAte is the biggest in conference in football, but overall, it is USA. The biggest rival, though, is tech; you know, the school in rust-on that we hate so much that we would all rush up to S. Arkansas with wieners and marshmallows if the place was on fire.

I think Ole Miss views Miss State similar to how we view ULM. With the rare exception of a perfect storm (Prescott QB years), Ole Miss views a loss to Miss State as an HUGE negative towards the competitiveness of their own football program.

Ole Miss wants to leave Miss State behind and be considered amongst the ranks of LSU and other higher tier SEC programs.

Having been born about halfway between the two schools, and having multiple family members who have attended and graduated from both, and family members who have been on faculty at both, I will say that I have seen a LOT of good natured ribbing, some of it pretty low, but no real hatred. The relationship among the fan bases is closer to UL/MT than it is to Alabama/Auburn. They love beating each other, and the winner of the Egg Bowl will rag the loser without mercy, but it is all pretty good natured. Maybe it is just my family, though, and the rest of the state is different.
