That is coaching and scheme. We have some very talented athletes at WR. They are misused terribly and we run a class a level high school passing scheme.

Man, it's not just coaching and scheme. We ran similar schemes in 2011 and 2012 and we had open receivers all over the field.

Not really. Same formations, much different passing concepts.

No we didn't. We have never had open receivers. All of our passes since Hud got here are guys out athleting the defenders for the ball. Our best passing years under Hud were mostly built around decent pass protection and/or a QB scrambling to throw the jump ball. Harry Peoples running crossing routes and making acrobatic catches was the exception. Pee wee, Lawson, and Surgent just used speed, size, athleticism, great hands. We never had WRs getting separation by getting off of jams, or schemes/routes or QB timing and intuition that opened up receivers. Accidents happened... but nothing else ever was coached to open up a receiver since Hud got here. Only pure athletic running and jumping. I expect that 75% of most pass plays. But we never have the 25% of passing completions due to routes and intelligent play design that most programs use against us.

With Lawson, Sargent, Peoples, Butler and Green we utilized all aspects of the passing game. Peoples was used on screens, shallow crossing routes and intermediate routes over the middle. Lawson and Surgent were our deep threats and went vertical very often. Butler was our possession receiver. Green was in the slot often, seam routes and fades is where he saw most of his receptions.

We rarely see the shallow crossing routes, the use of the middle of the field or the use of the TE. For the past two seasons we have run isolation routes/one read routes that rely on athleticism instead of scheme or true route concepts designed to create holes in the defense. Our passing game is terrible when it should be our strength.

It would be easier to whiteboard it than explain it in here.
