Tyren Johnson scored a game-high 22 points - his 11th straight game in double figures - and five players total scored double figures for Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns in an 83-63 victory over FIU Thursday evening at the Cajundome.
The Ragin' Cajuns remained undefeated (6-0) at the Cajundome in Sun Belt play. UL posted its third straight double-figure victory at the facility.
Louisiana (10-12, 7-4 Sun Belt) put the game away when a 12-2 run in the early stages of the second half turned a 48-38 advantage into a 20-point lead with 12 minutes remaining.
From that point Cajuns lead remained above 18 points. The lead was at its largest when a Willie Lago triple with 6:05 left made it 74-48.
The Cajuns placed at least four scorers in double figures for the second straight outing. Randell Daigle scored 19 points - his most since 16 at UALR on Jan. 16 and second-most of the season - and shot 5-of-6 from three-point range.
FIU (7-18, 4-8 Sun Belt) was led by J.C. Otero who posted a double-double as he scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
Johnson scored two baskets right out of halftime to extend UL's lead to 44-29 by the 19:23 mark.
The Golden Panthers battled back to a 10-point deficit, 48-38, getting a pair of Marvin Roberts layups during a 9-4 run.
Out of the 15-minute timeout the Cajuns got two quick scores - a three-pointer from Johnson and dunk from Travis Bureau - to reopen a 15-point edge at 53-38 with 14:50 remaining.
Daigle scored five points on a 7-0 Cajuns spurt that brought the lead to 20 points for the first time. A Lamar Roberson dunk at 12:04 made it 60-40.
Louisiana improved to 8-2 vs. FIU in the Cajundome and has now won the last seven regular season meetings between the two schools in the facility.
Each team had a 5-0 spurt in the first four minutes and the result was a 6-all tie. Bureau broke an 8-all tie at 15:12 with a triple on the right wing.
Bureau gave UL some early breathing room with dunks on back-to-back possessions that opened a 17-11 lead.
The Golden Panthers cut the lead to 22-18 at 9:23. The Cajuns received a triple from Daigle and a running layup by Johnson to increase their advantage to 27-18 by the end of the eight minute mark.
FIU scored five unanswered and it was 30-23 with 5:17 left in the first half. Daigle connected on his third triple of the half to return the lead to double figures and it remained at least nine points through halftime.
Louisiana shot 46.9 percent (15-of-32) and held FIU to 31.0 percent (9-of-29) in the opening stanza.
The Ragin' Cajuns host UALR on Saturday, Feb. 6 at the Cajundome. Tipoff is slated for 7:05 p.m.
