I never said play 3 road games every year for the most money. That is what poor schools do. We can be smart about it. First, I said we should always try to get games with Rice, Houston, SMU, Tech, Tulane and USM for recruiting purposes. You conveniently ignore that. When that is not possible, that game should be a P5, not Kent State.
Secondly, We should only play 1 straight up, one off, money game per year. The other 2 P5 games should be some combination of 1 for 1, 2 for 1, or the Home and Dome series. That is not whoring your program. That is smart scheduling. Every 3 or 4 years we'll be hosting a P5 at Cajun Field or the Superdome. You conveniently ignore that.
Top G5? If they are ranked, then yes, you are correct. I would alter your statement to say you earn national respect by defeating ranked teams and top, unranked P5 programs AND almost beating ranked teams. Look at how much play App has gotten from the Tennessee game and Troy has gotten from the Clemson game. You earn national respect by defeating ranked teams and top G5 program.
You already said you are OK with 2 P5's and a G5. All I am saying is when we can't schedule a G5 from the preferred group, we schedule a P5.
We were also available at that time, so what was it that made La Tech more appealing than UL to CUSA? Was it La Tech's wins over high profile P5 teams, or the fact they were members of that sinking ship of the WAC?
I contend it was their WAC membership that got Tech into CUSA.
App has gotten play from it's game against Tennessee because they have continued to win. Had they lost a few more games afterwards, no one would be talking about it at all. As for defeating a top G5 program with a winning record even if not ranked, plays better for your progran than beating a 2-5 Indiana. In the end, you must do something with your season afterwards. App State has defeated its last 3 SBC opponents by an average of 24 points per game.
I submit to you that had neither Troy nor App nearly pulled the upset they would not be getting near the votes for the Top-25 they are getting right now.
Again, my bottom line is when we can't schedule from the group of preferred G5's, we should schedule a P5.
All four of our NOLA Bowls would still have happened if we had 3 P5's instead of 2.
