You know it's mostly to do with timing, right? Monroe wasn't a terrible team as they finished 6-6 that year they won in Tuscaloosa. 2007 was Bama's first year under Saban and they finished 7-6. While it's an impressive win nonetheless for the Hoax, it's not like they beat one of the Alabama teams from 2008 on that have won 10 plus games every year.
It's the same with their win over #8 Arkansas in 2012. ULM had their best team in the last couple of decades and finished the year 8-5, while Arkansas was well over ranked to start the season and limped home at 4-8.
It's when you play these teams and under what circumstances.
When UL beat #25 TAMU, we had a good team and TAMU was down that year. They also turned the ball over like 6 times and were playing on the road in Lafayette. When we beat K-State in 2009, that Wildcat team wasn't very good. I think they finished 6-6 with 2 wins over the FCS and therefor did not qualify for a bowl. We should have wins over Florida in 12' and would have beat a bad Kentucky team last year if we had the team from 2014. Again, timing.
Louisiana and ULM have been blown out in these games probably at the same percentage if you look at overall history. But from time to time, they catch a team in the right circumstances and will win.
Well I guess the thinking is if we play enough of these games it wont feel like we are in the suckbelt anymore. Hope we still have a team after the early season match up.
To FarmerBROWN nothing beats a million plus dollar check. He never takes fan interest into account over money interest. He and Jay spent an inordinate amount of time showing how our fans were not interested in Boise or McNeese. They forgot to mention low expectations from a bad record from last year, economy, flood. They did mention time.
How do you think Tech got the perception that they have a very good football program? It wasn't conference championships. It wasn't Bowl games. It was P5 wins. This is who they beat with the P5 schools they played that year.
1996 - beat Mississippi State (Miss St, Texas A&M, Arkansas)
1997 - beat Alabama and California (Arkansas, California, Auburn, Alabama)
1999 - beat Alabama (Florida State, Texas A&M, Alabama, USC)
2002 - beat Oklahoma State (Clemson, Ok St, Penn St, Texas A&M)
2003 - beat Michigan State (Miami, Michigan State, LSU)
2008 - beat Mississippi State (Kansas, Miss St)
2011 - beat Mississippi (Miss St, Ole Miss)
2012 - beat Illinois (Virginia, Illinois, Texas A&M)
2014 - beat Illinois in Bowl game (Oklahoma, Auburn)
They built their brand on P5 wins. You can't beat them if you are afraid to play them.
Why schedule Bama when there are the following opportunities...
Between 2017 and 2022, the cupboard is hardly bare when it comes to scheduling opportunities. Just looking at these teams as opportunities.....
USM.....6 avails, 2019-2021
Rice....5 avails, 2020-2022
Marshall....5 avails, 2018-2022
Tulane....4 avails, 2019-2022
Vandy...5 avails, 2018-2022
UCF....14 avails, 2018-2022
SMU...8 avails, 2019-2022
LTU....7 avails, 2018-2022 (includes 1 & 1 with Baylor
Western Kentucky.....10 avails 2018-2022
Kansas.....13 avails 2017-2022
Could go on and on. They brag that RCAF is over 2million and then turn around and schedule a body bag game for 1.5 million. Either RCAF is way behind where it needs to be or SF has a death wish...
I KNOW we won't win Hawk. But I think our players, coaches, and everyone in the program can learn from the game. He'll, Hud could learn more from the postgame handshake with saban than he has learned in 6 years here
You guys are lucky I am not scheduling.
We would play our yearly state FCS preseason game and 3 P5's. The only non-SBC G5's I would attempt to schedule would be Rice, Houston, SMU, Tech, Tulane and Southern Miss, strictly for recruiting purposes. If we can't get 6 wins with an FCS and our SBC schedule, we should be ashamed.
