Obviously Coach Marlin was joking about trying to get picked lower at this stage. Wimp Sanderson always cried about how poor his Alabama teams were in pre season in order to hove opponents overlook them. Same thing is happening here. Squad knows expectations are low and they are using that as motivation.

I understand that but I'd prefer them using high expectations as a motivating factor rather than the other way around.

I'm not so sure that Marlin would be able to take those expectations and create the proper motivation though.
