KPEL-FM, for example, shows up as number 11 on that report, but if you narrow down to Men 25-54 (the target demo), that ranking obviously changes. When I was PD in 2013 and '14, KPEL-FM was consistently in the top 5. As of the spring, it looks like that may be the case again. There's a lot more (even than what I described above) that goes into analyzing ratings and determining a station's true market position.
For those that did not want to go through the trouble of finding the data via the link, here is a brief summary. In the fall of 14, KPEL AM (1420) had a 1.1 share while KLWB (103.7 FM) had a 0.6 share. In the spring of 16, 1420 AM had a 0.9 share while 103.7 FM had a 0.6 share. In conclusion, while 1420 AM is suffering a slight market share loss, it is not to 103.7 FM. They are losing it to the music stations. 103.7 FM is having no success in growing it's share.

In regards to KPEL AM discussing Cajun athletics. Jay and Scott did discuss what the Cajun football team needs to do to turn things around in the 4 PM hour. Conclusion was they need to have improved OL play and a healthy Eli. This will allow a more effective running game which will lead to play action success in the passing game. With improved offense, there won't be so much pressure on the defense. Jay also previewed today's show in which Scott Farmer will make his monthly appearance. Main topic will be football scheduling philosophy. Cajun fall baseball practice was also discussed due to a couple of calls. It is not accurate to say Cajun athletics was not discussed on KPEL yesterday. Granted, the first hour had a lot of focus on the current baseball playoffs. That is a big national story these days so it makes sense there would be some time spent on that topic.

    Moon lost it....period!

1420 is dead in the water. This station will be non-existent by Jan-2018 mark it down. You can't constantly bash a fan base that listens to your station, then be an apologist for an Arse Hole Clown of an AD, along with all of the other useless non-sports thrown onto that 1940's radio station.

    DONE

Only way to get to Moon will be plugging up the old interweb cable and thumbing your way to that dungeon of a website

This crumble falls solely on one person's shoulders and he knows it. Hope the "few" good one's find their way to FM radio

The bottom line is 1420 ESPN non sports programming is killing them. TTT is a joke only enjoyed by a few. It was an ok filler for the dead time in summer but on Tursday after a big football weekend? No.

Rebecca Black and "Friday" has run its course. It WAS a cute one timer. Now it's a reason to change stations. .

The whole deal between UL and the "flagship station" ties the hands of anyone from being brutally honest on a few points that are important to fans that could be broached. But be real about it, no station ever bites the hand that feeds them to the degree some wish for. Heck even the corn dog flagship really didn't get on Miles until the TAF game them a wink.

AM/FM is a whole other issue. If our admin is smart that will be THE issue whenever renewal comes up.

It seems the Tiger station in upper Lafayette isn't receiving any real benefit from the 1420 slide. People either going elsewhere, XM, or turning the radio off.

I quit listening to Jay after the Tigue construction fiasco. I only listen to him when I can't see the game in person or on TV and that's because I have no other choice.

Whoever thought we'd all have to resort to this type of behavior over a liar AD. Unfortunately, I think this is only the beginning.

People on the board made statements years ago when 103.7 came on that Lafayette couldnt support two sports stations. For awhile I thought they were wrong. Now, we may have just one but not because of the orgianal reasons.

I switched to 103.7 due to the arrogance of John Moon during the Tigue debacle.

103.7 is far superior in regards to sound quality, program content and on air professionalism.

I can honestly say I do not miss anything about 1420. John Moon, Terrible Tune Tuesday, Gary and Shannon Wilkerson's mindless babbling and the same 2 callers calling in all day to every show does not make for good sports radio.

Come on. At least you still have Mr bitter on Saturdays and the Lucky Dueces morning show featuring the A Bryan's wish list plugs

Terrestrial radio AM and FM are old technology. I think it will be gone sooner rather than later kind of like print newspapers. With Next radio and other apps coming on line, I think we will be getting radio over the internet before to long.

I have never understood the complaint about the games not being on FM Radio. I always listen to the games on 107.9 with no problem. I listen on Radio PUP too and never had any problems. During softball and basketball season there may be womens basketball or softball on AM only.

103.7 is a good station but the heavy LSU slant gets to me sometimes. I think that the main reason they have the ratings they have is because they are the broadcast flagship for LSU in the Lafayette Market. I think they would be even stronger if 98.1 would not reach the Lafayette market because they would be the only carrier in the market. If they would happen to bid the broadcast rights to Cajun games, I doubt very seriously that 103.7 would trade the Cajuns for the Tigers. Sad to say, there are just as many, if not more, Tiger fans in the area as Cajun fans, it just doesn't work out for them monetarily. That's not the fault of the radio station it's the fault of the University for not putting a good product out there.

You may be right about having only one station eventually. However, 1420 AM is still the leader and in the last two quarters in which data was available, nos. were stable in that regard. Perhaps that has changed in the last quarter but we won't have those nos. until next year. For those who say 1420 is down to 500 listeners, that means 103.7 has 300 listeners. For the record, I do like some of the hosts on 103.7. I also think 1420 nos. will go up if the major sports at UL start having more success.

I reached out to him a few weeks ago asking him to give me an answer to a basic question about % of fault he saw the coaching staff should own for the current state of football. He didn't answer my question because he doesn't like to blame and that one day, he will discuss his view of Cajuns fans.

I expected that answer. Why, because they are the flagship. He will not knock anything the Cajuns are doing because of the relationship he and the radio station has to UL. It's political.

i still like the station; the only thing i can't listen to is oh, brother. should pipe that in, on a loop, to the death-row cells.

I worked for the last AM station to ever hit overall#1 in Lafayette.

It was short lived and an anomaly.

In today's world for an FM station to come in behind an inaccessible AM station, tells me the FM station is struggling mightily.

Since I moved to Houston and started listening to "real" sports talk radio I cannot stomach the unprofessional hosts that are on 1420.

It is absolutely amazing that someone who has any stake in KPEL as a business can listen to a segment on 1420 and not immediately make a change. The talking points that Moon Head brings up is comical (not in a good way) and his "I told you so" elitist attitude makes him sound like a total jack ___.

I understand Houston is a much larger market than Lafayette. However, 103.7 has proven that it is possible to produce a radio show that sounds professional in Lafayette.

I have looked for a list of 1420's sponsors but haven't had any luck. If anyone knows where I can find it please let me know. I plan to politely inform those sponsors that because they support a radio station who employs a talk show host that constantly insults the local University's fanbase I will not be patronizing them.

Maybe losing a few sponsors due to Mooney Walker will get the attention of KPEL management. As I am typing this I know the management or owners of KPEL could not care less about what the station broadcasts. As I said above, anyone who listen to even one segmemt of BEV instantly understands that the host is an arrogant ___ clown who knows very little about sports. The amount of air time that is wasted by annoying fillers on that show is unforgivable. The only thing more annoying than TTT is the Hellllloooooooooooooo Everybody that the host yells into the mic to open up the 4 o'clock show.

How can no oneclose to these guys, even a family member, tell them that these antics are absolutely horrible? Their families should be ashamed that they allow their loved ones to continue this type of crap on live radio without trying to tell them how stupid it makes them sound.
