Got to speak with a couple of HS assistants this weekend. Both think HUD is a good coach. Surprisingly, they liked our offensive scheme. They are of the opinion that UL is lacking talent, particularly at QB and OL. When you are getting beat upfront there are no good plays.

Cannot be a pretty good coach if you cannot recruit. Cannot be a pretty good coach if you constantly get smashed by teams you are suppose to be on par with. We have evidence stAte, Appalachian State, N Texas, LTUR, USA all have pistol whipped Hud coached teams.

No matter how you want to ignore it, recruiting is the #1 quality a good coach needs to be good at. To say he is not doing a good job on recognizing, or recruiting good talent says it all. You cannot win without the foundation of recruiting.

Agreed. I think the recruiting has been subpar and is a reflection on the whole staff. My point is that some here think HUD is a knuckle dragging Neanderthal when it come to coaching. The opinions I have gotten from people in the football business paint a different picture. I hope he can start recruiting better, but the odds are stacked against him.

You get to speak to a college coach on here regularly. Basin gave his very simple opinion above. And he isn't going to go into great detail out of respect for the coaches. But he is very accurate with his basic observation. HS coaches aren't necessarily gifted at teaching fundamentals and technique necessary at the D1 level. Some are. But very few. They'll just about all be somewhat amazed by the plays and overall scheme at the D1 coaching level. I'd like you to ask them which FBS program doesn't have a good coach and isn't running a good offensive scheme. The list will be short if not vacant.

You don't have to be a "knuckle dragging Neanderthal" to not be teaching good fundamentals and technique. Again... and I think you'll find this interesting... ask the high school coaches which FBS programs have bad head coaches that are running bad plays and poor schemes.

Wasn't Haack benched for another QB because of his inability to either perform or grasp the offense? Jennings has not been benched. Why?

Totally understood. The debate that's hard to keep in focus on here is that no one denies we have talent issues at certain positions. But some think it's the complete explanation for our ineffective competitiveness. It is not our predominant issue. We are not devoid of talent. And to have the same head coach for 6 seasons... and point to talent deficits... doesn't give that coach a workable excuse in any argument regardless.

I've never understood college head coaches when they go on losing streaks. It's like a porn star stud who can no longer catch wood. The doctor can hold boner pills in front of him all day long and say, "Mine isn't as big as yours, but I know how to make it so hard a cat can't scratch it.". But the porn star knows best... and keeps trying to fight his way on with a limp noodle... until he drinks himself into a coma... and dies homeless and bonerless in obscurity.

He was for Nixon in the New Mexico State game, had Nixon not been injured according to Hud Jennings wouldn't have come back into the game.

Metry, that's a bit overdramatic. Most have not called Hudspeth a knuckle dragging Neanderthal, I did say he has been stubborn to the end and certainly ego centric and unwilling to take ownership of his decisions. I've spoken to coaches as well, three former coaches in this program and all of them see similar occurances including poor techniques and a limited playbook with very little change from last season.

Missing the point here. You would have to go back and read the entire thread. Jennings needs to be replaced because of his ineptness, inability to learn the playbook, incapability to throw a pass, indecision to run an option style offense, etc, etc.......yet he remains at QB. Benched for a quarter and for a season are two different things. I don't know if the second string QB is the answer, but at least he will get "playing experience" which was the major knock against the other QB's on this team to start the year. Plus, the remaining QB's will be here longer than a year. So if we are going to suffer another horrible season, let's go into next season with an experienced play caller. Jennings project has failed miserably. And for those who don't see it, don't know what else to say.

People want to put blame on the offensive line (and that may be some of the problem), but when the QB doesn't know what routes the receivers are running and has to wait until the receiver turns and looks at the QB, that just gives the defense that much more time to get to the QB and/or receiver. Jennings either stares down the receiver he is throwing to (waiting to see where his route takes him) or he just throws the ball up for grabs.
