WRONG! The beat down that LaTech put on us in 2014 was start of the slide. 1st time I saw Hud just totally out coached, unfortunately since then it has happened often.
excuses mounting for every "bad" moment.
Technically, Hud's first time as our head coach getting taken to the woodshed was against Western Kentucky in 2011. Taggart always had good teams there. And later that year against Arkansas State when Hugh Freeze handed him another decisive loss. I'm not going to count the season opener at Oklahoma State cause they were way more talented than us, nor am I going to blame Arizona, cause those refs were crooked as ____.
So in 2011 only two coaches really gave it to Hud. Both guys went on to better jobs. So if you ask me, in 2011 Hud did a pretty darn good coaching job.
2012, we saw North Texas take advantage of Hud's inability to adjust once Harry Peoples hurt his shoulder. We also saw North Texas run the exact same play against us over, and over, and over, and over again. To me...this was the beginning of the slide. Failure to adjust after one goddamn player gets injured, and not adjusting the defense...at all after watching them run the same play.
It wasn't 2014, it was 2012.
If you read the South Alabama message board after our win everyone of their fans thought HUD did. In fact everytime someone loses a conference game the number 1 reason given by fans is that he was outcoached. Except when a coach loses in his first year. They usually get a pass because the previous coach was a bum and he has to be given time to put in his system (Tulane is in this phase of fan opinion).
I think Hud is a good stepping stone from Bustle like Bustle was a stepping stone from the one that shall not be named. Hud has set the stage for a good hire (just think 15 years ago Mcsuck coaches would not come here) ... Hopefully, the next coach can win the big game
