Cliff Newman still makes what hair I have left stand up.

If you were around for the name fight in the 80's, MACNeese, the American Press, and their mouthpiece Cliff Newman fought tooth and nail to hurt our university. It was akin to war. You DO NOT ever forget your enemy, never trusting them even if we have distanced ourselves. I'd rather tolerate the Hoax and LTUR bunch simply for that reason.

Not only around but in the middle of the damn thing----I can honestly say one of the great disappointing moments of my life with the SOB Newman and the chicken $it smile on his face----It crushed DR Fisher who was the Alumni Chairman at the time----Oh ZZ do I remember!!!

Petty politics almost destroyed all so many had worked so hard for. What did Cliff Newman and McNeese accomplish by this myopic opposition? l remember that smug piece of excrement with that T shirt that said something like USL .... you can kiss your S goodbye. I was never so humiliated as a Cajun alumni so see all of other schools in the state relish in our defeat because we had dared to be different.

Rick I think our USL deal was that we said "you can kiss OUR S goodby"---then when it was defeated Newman had a sign with that damn smile saying "You can kiss my S Hello"
Steaming as I type!!!! BTW great post!!!

A sad time in UL history. Bottom line. Look where we are now, look where they are. This thought ought to bring tons of satisfaction to your tortured soul. Boomer, there is NO us vs them anymore. The separation between the two schools is vast!!

You were missed last night at the CRZ throwdown!!

If I remember correctly the great irony in all this was this. The state was just starting to hit hard budget times. So as all these people from O'Rielly, Newman and others legislatively fought the name change, there were only two universities that received INCREASED funding that year. Yup, the corn dogs of course, but also UL. We might of not gotten the name then, but these "protectors of LSU" under the guise of protecting their regions got screwed in the end.

My mother in law then lived in the LC area and kept me anything related to USL in the American Mess. Had the picture of Newman and his freaking sign...until I ran out of Charmin.

Gotta love the ignorance of the Hoax people. I know I'm not the only one that has thought why the pharmacy school isn't with the medical school? Some of the same knowledge is required, and it seems somewhat a duplication. I can see a day when that light bulb clicks in Baton Rouge unless the state figures out higher ed funding. Yes, Saturday cannot get here soon enough! Already on the meds...

The mantra back then was "You can kiss my S goodbye."

The slogan today should be "Forget U"

    We are LOUISIANA.
