Listen, I think we got off on the wrong foot here about the whole name thing....and, perhaps, the conversation has drifted away from where it should be rightfully heading.
I think what we should be discussing instead is how U-S-L should actually be a branch of Louisiana Tech.
Tech was founded as the Louisiana Industrial Institute in 1894.
UL-L was founded as the Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute in 1901.

I think The Louisiana Tech University of South Central Louisiana @ Lafayette has a nice ring to it.
Hell, for a long time, you even had the same mascot as Louisiana Tech...
You might want to rethink your premise. The Muddogs represented the South Central part of the state...
As you astutely point out...LSU represented the State of Louisiana.
