The University of Louisiana SYSTEM was created in 1974, at the same time the Board of Regents was created, under the La State Constitution of 1974. The ULS was and is comprised of 9 existing and established schools, to serve the educational needs of the whole state.
There is no flag ship.
If the system had been originally named "The University of Southwestern Louisiana System," you might have a point about the whole appropriated name fiasco. However, it wasn't and you don't.
In 1999, the Louisiana legislature allowed USL to undertake a name change, however, because there is no Flag Ship in the ULS system, by design, the legislators wisely included verbiage which afforded ALL of the 9 members the opportunity to adopt "The University of Louisiana" as long as the name change included the municipal designator signifying where each school was domiciled.
This is the EXACT same naming convention the state uses for the Louisiana STATE University system, which does have a Flag Ship, ergo Louisiana State University - Alexandria, Louisiana State University - Eunice, Louisiana State University - Shreveport, with the municipality designators for each school.
I'm sorry that USL fans feel like they're special little snowflakes where the extant laws of the State of Louisiana shouldn't apply, and where they can self-identify as whatever they want, oblivious to what they actually are in a safe space where common sense and reason don't apply to them.
What will USL demand next, trigger warnings?
Oh, wait. Nevermind. I just read the thread where USL and the Slum Belch whined, stamped their wittle feet and held their breath until ESPN3 and Raycom created a broadcasting safe space for them by expanding the broadcast team covering the game that USL didn't have a ____ing thing to do with pitching to the networks or setting up. Just like the naming fiasco, USL comes in after the fact and tries to appropriate something that somebody else created.
Maybe I'll should put trigger warnings on my posts so your delicate sensibilities suffer the affrontery of being asked to consider things logically and rationally??
