Louisiana Rising Benefit Concert helps flood relief
Star-studded benefit concert to help flooding victims in Louisiana
I drove over the Surrey Street bridge yesterday and the river is STILL out of its banks. The two buildings on the west bank are finally out of the water. I then drove through Beaver Park. Most of the park had at least 3 feet of water.
I had a meeting at a house on the river that had five feet of water in it. I walked down to the bank as far as I could go and found tons of dead fish with the water still black. It didn't stink that much today. I guess it has stunk all it is going to stink. They still had some very large cat fish in the river and egrets were feeding along the bank so it appears that the ecosystem along the river is trying to get back to normal.
The owner of the house has decided to demolish and rebuild higher. I was meeting with the demolition contractor and he said he bid on 3 homes on Acacia Drive, two on Demanade and the house where we were. That makes 6 that he knows of that are scheduled for demolition. The man I am working for had come to the conclusion that once he removed all of the sheet rock on the walls there wasn't much left. He was going to spend a ton of money to repair a 45 year old home that was at elevation 13.5 (2.5 feet below the base flood elevation). Now he will have a new home that will be at elevation 18.0. Definitely a selling point over the rest o the homes along the street.

Watch out everywhere for wildlife. My parents live on Bayou Teche and had a 5' gator in their back yard. I even had a 4' gator in my ditch and I'm 3 miles from the bayou and about a mile from the basin levee.
The gage at the E. Broussard bridge dipped below flood stage for four hours this afternoon before heading back up. That is the first time that gage went below flood stage since August 12th.
