Dion Ray will be in this article next year when the battle is between Jordan Davis, Ray, and probably a player to be named later. He will be given every chance to compete here because that's why he signed here over number P5 schools. He didn't want to play defense and we said that he'd have a legitimate shot at QB. He'll be a Soph. next year and I think he's got just as good of a chance as Davis to take the reigns. He's 6-0 200lbs which isn't that bad, he'll probably add a few more pounds to that frame.
If he gets beat out again next year, I see him transferring unfortunately. He's WAY TOO GOOD of an athlete to not play in some capacity.
I'm all about development, but if Davis isn't the guy, then you have a 3rd year Soph next year in Ray with a strong 3 years to play.....not a bad situation.
In my eyes, you HAVE to win this year. Eli's last year, coming off a terrible season, need to get those who fell off the wagon back on.
I do think our team will be better depth-wise next year though.
Expectations aren't that high right now to begin with. In my opinion, Hud doesn't have to win right now. He has tons of goodwill in the bank, but I want to see changes made, not just band aids covering gaping wounds. I have little faith Hud will properly utilize McGuire without having an exact genetic clone of Alonzo Harris in the backfield. That's the brutal truth at the moment. Losing The Prophet will suck, but with Wright behind him, and Ragas we are set well for the future.
If that don't...going 4-8 2 years in a row sure gets you closer...can't undo last year. He needs to win now to keep some energy in the fan base and more importantly for recruiting to show it was an anomaly not the new norm. Some could also say he might be doing exactly what you said with putting in Dion Ray.
