The country's top amateur golf event will have local representation beginning Monday, when UL rising senior Fernando Cruz Valle takes part in the U.S. Amateur Championship. Cruz Valle is one of 312 players in the field at Michigan's Oakland Hills Country Club and earned that spot in a wrenching four-hole playoff at sectional qualifying at Links on the Bayou in Alexandria four weeks ago. The two-time All-Sun Belt Conference pick and a recent honoree in the All-Louisiana Collegiate Team will play Monday and Tuesday on each of the event's two courses, at which time the 312 will be cut to the low 64 scores and the field moves into match-play rounds for the balance of the week. It'll be an accomplishment just to make the match play, which will be aired on FOX Sports and FOX Sports 1 from Wednesday-Sunday. Ragin' Cajun golf coach Theo Sliman will accompany Cruz Valle on Friday's trip and will serve as caddie for the two medal-play rounds. Locals can get highlights, scores and other coverage of the Monday-Tuesday rounds on USGA.org.
