Teams are going to dink and dunk us again like crazy. There is nothing wrong with running man to man. I wish Buckley would ask Hudspeth about why he lined up our boys in such tight man at the line but didn't bump any receivers off the line at the snap. THAT is the recipe for failure, not man defense by itself. We also had no help over the top. None. Couple those issues with the lack of pressure and its disaster.
With the rules today in football if you don't get to the QB it doesn't matter what you run you will get picked apart.
You don't HAVE to run strict man coverage to be a successful defense. Tampa ran their Cover 2. The Panthers were a zone scheme secondary in both their '03 and '15 Super Bowl runs, where they had a really good defense. Indy and New England both ran zones in their SB runs.
If we don't have the talent at corner and nickel slot to run man to man, then it's best to run a scheme that fits what we have.
Our success or lack of on defense this season will be the D-Line. Can we stop the run to force 2nd and 9, rather than having a 2nd and 5? Can we get decent pressure with just 4-5 rushers so that offenses have a tougher time anticipating blitz calls?
This.
Just look at the NFL where you maybe have two true lockdown corners these days. It's not that the talent at corner has gotten worse. But rather, the rules have been geared more and more to aid the offenses because "all football fans want to see more passing and more points".
I think it's BS what has been done, but the rules are now much more heavily enforced against the DBs. You're barely allowed to breathe on the receiver as you try to run downfield with him.
Being a corner on an island is almost impossible these days.
Exactly. I think we have guys who can cover in man. However, when you are lining them up in the receiver's face and they don't provide any hold up at the line and they don't have anyone over the top watching their back, the odds are not in our favor. Hopefully the DL can get better pressure on the QB this year and we can throw in some timely blitzes to throw teams off but they are going to just going to eat into the clock with all the 3-5 yard passes this year.
My reading comprehension is just fine. We aren't Tampa. Our defensive coordinator isn't Monte Kiffin. And we didn't choose to run zone. We are not going to zone because Hud wants to...BECAUSE HE FEELS HE HAS TO. This isn't a preference, it's desperation. Major difference. Your using Tampa and Carolina as examples...they CHOOSE TO ____ING RUN ZONE.
