Ragin' Cajun football in good shape heading into signing day

I would not discount Robert Walker. He was thought to be one of our top signees a year ago. He did some impressive things in the weight room during the summer and his play in the two weeks of August practices indicated he would play as a true freshman. Now he will have the benefit of being able to participate in spring practice. With he, Streeter, and now Spikes; we will have great competition at RB next season. I suspect all three will play and that will allow Miller to go back to WR.

Walker will be a guy that's right there with him. Robert has shown his loyalty and his love for this university and I love that about a young guy who hasn't dressed for one game. He supposedly has gotten a lot stronger in the weightroom over the past year and we all of a sudden have a solid backfield that should be as talented as any in the league this year. I think the coaches should be commended on their recruiting class this year and the success in addressing some serious needs. We have a serious problem if Marlin Miller has to go anywhere near the backfield this year unless he's running the wildcat. We should have a lot of playmaking ability back there. Let's also not forget about Mr. Streeter who I think will be solid as well.

I completely agree. I also think that with the RB's we have now, our KR and PR games will get infinitely better, nevermind the fact that our running game is back.

Whether the Running game is back or not remains to be seen. I still think the coaches need to tweak the playbook a bit in order to utilize the guys we have. Masson is obviously not as confident and comfortable running the ball like McGuire or Gautier is so I think they need to incorporate some things that limit his running touches. However, we have more playmakers now than we've had at one time in a while just with the additions so far and I think I can say that with confidence even without seeing these guys play yet. The coaching staff should be commended on what they did this year.

Mike, I'm not discounting Rob Walker. Bernard Smith stands out in my mind because he's at least played in junior college and is slotted to step in at rush end after the graduation of Hall Davis.

I think at least one of the three between Walker, Spikes and Streeter will make an impact at tailback, and maybe even a rotation of two or three if they all do well. Streeter is going to get a chance to contribute immediately on special teams.

As for Marlin Miller, the DA has already reported that coach Bustle says he will move back to receiver in 2010.

An explosive running game will make the QB position, who ever that may be, that much more dangerous. All of the guys in contention to start at QB can sling it. With Mac being used as an extra threat, we should have PLENTY of options on offense. This is getting interesting...

_ It actually depends on whether Bates will sign a national letter of intent. If so, that ties him for one year to LSU regardless of whether he enrolls. He would have to sign a release to go elsewhere midyear on scholarship. If he doesn't sign one, that leaves him open to do what he pleases a year from now. _

Wrong. If he signs a NLOI, and the AD at lsu does not sign it, it is void. If the AD does sign it, but the school fails to grant him a scholarship upon enrollment, the NLOI is void. He cannot be held to a contract in which the other party renegs on its obligation. AND a NLOI MUST have in its language the aid he is being offered. If he is being offered no aid, then he can void the contract for inadequate consideration. By NCAA regulation, the school cannot guarantee a scholarship for the 2011 season, so no scholarship this year, the contract is nonbinding.

I got the tip about his commitment as I walked into a movie at 7:15 p.m. Sunday. My source said that Spikes had just committed.

Spikes confirmed via text message that he had committed at 7:50 p.m. - his first contact from anyone about the news. For my wife's sake, I waited until the movie was over to call Spikes for an in-depth interview.

His rushing numbers as a senior won't wow you - 85 yards and one touchdown on 35 carries was what I found in my research, and he said that was accurate - but he said that he missed half the season with an ankle injury suffered in the preseason. (He was the team's fourth-leading rusher in 2009.) He later moved to safety.


Who recruited him and, I guess, recruits the Dallas FW / North Texas area? Looks like a heck of a job!

His high ankle sprain wouldn't allow him to cut like he wanted to, but he said that he's 100 percent now. _
