On a good clear day, I pick up Houston AM stations all the way to Jennings. AM isn't the problem.
Only a handful of AM stations are clear channel stations. ESPN 1420 is a low watts station even by AM standards. Add to that it is by law required to cut back even further at sunset.

Your basic premise is correct. They are a low watt AM station.

Both radio stations have been around forever and they don't want to give up their frequency. They have to reduce power at night because of atmospheric affects on the A.M. Radio signal. WGN in Chicago and WWL in New Orleans don't have that problem and they can blast out 10,000 watts (I think). There is another blowtorch AM radio station in St. Louis but I forgot its call sign ( I think it is WLS but not sure).

I think OTA radio will be a thing of the past very soon with radio available only on the internet via streaming. I have never had any problem with radio pup. But I prefer to log on to the website and click the listen now button.
You're thinking of clear channel stations. They go out at 50k at night. Most AM radio are similar to ESPN 1420. They were set up for local broadcasting. There are thousands like that.

Foote is a moron. He'd be laughed out of the media in any other market.

I'm sure he's a nice guy, just can't stand listening to him talk sports.

Someone like Bitter, on the other hand, is bad radio and a jackass.

You haven't listened to a lot of different markets apparently. I find most sports talk to be horrible. Most are ignorant of anything beyond their signal strength. I have quit listening to all sports radio. Thank god for being able to stream music.

There does seem to be a lot more that waste a lot of time talking about themselves. In another market i heard a guy talk for ten minutes about daughters softball tourney, after the break they talked for 15 minutes debating whether partner should get a hotel or drive back and forth to the following weekends tourney, then took calls with hotel requests

Lol!! When I use to be on the road a lot, I had XM. I haven't had much experience with locals. I defer to you! 😉

I enjoy listening to Kevin. That is probably because he is an Astros and Saints fan as I am. Now I agree his passion (negatively and positively) overruns his logic at times. In the last couple of years he has also increased his discussion of the Cajuns substantially. He tends to focus on the actual play and says little about the off the field issues when it comes to the Cajuns. Some prefer that approach. I do find his warnings of things like medicine seasons and scoring too many runs amusing.

WWL has 50000 Watts, not 10000. Big station in St. Louis is KMOX which is on 1130. Lots of Cardinal fans due to that station. Another strong station is WOAI in San Antonio which is the Spurs flagship. . Their radio guy is outstanding. Can catch that one easily in Florida at night

Kevin Foote says things for reactions. I'm now convinced of that. The guy said Griffey Jr was not a first ballot HOF because he had injured seasons. Clown show.
