Like who? The defense who couldn't get off the field? then when they would manage to get off the field our offense would go 3 and out or turn it over. It's easy just to look and say oh hey that guys out of shape... Well if you stay on the field for 3/4 of the game... You are gonna be tired... The more tired you are the less likely to make plays and then you can't get off the field. Lack of quality depth and Us sucking compounded everything.
Yes but they sucked after three plays. So maybe their slow overweight asses were not able to get off the field and only got slower and more tired.
Like I said in an earlier post...the new lineman? Because that's pretty much all we had..with a whole new staff that was named late... When you think...you are slow...or you look slow. I'm not saying none of them could have been in better shape but those same squatty guys will be here this year and I bet you they look faster....and I don't think a 300 pound man is shaving 2-3 seconds off his 40. They should look faster simply because they should know what they are doing. I didn't realize just how much we would miss juicy and ringo but it was pretty obvious that was 2 studs who knew where they were going and everyone else. If anything they were mentally out of shape. Think of all the seniors we lost the year before that knew how to get everyone lined up and that had been with the same staff. I personally think we are gonna see a big jump in the defense this year and it won't be simply because they ran some extra gassers.
I told everyone we'd find out how good those two were. I was roundly ridiculed and told we had better guys waiting. I'm still waiting.
If you think that the only problem was experience you're nuts
Where did I say that? Inexperience and bad coaching will cause one to look slow and out of shape...go watch them run sprints and see if you think those big boys are slow and out of shape... We were bad at a lot of things which caused us to be a bad football team... If you think conditioning was the only problem or one of our bigger problems you're nuts.
I hope you're right... but I was told (ought oh... here comes the source question) that we did indeed slack off over the summer and into the fall on conditioning. It was not the usual tough strength and conditioning system that Hud and Whitt put the entire team through in years 1-4. I heard that... but maybe it was just another excuse put out for a bad season.
I think a bunch of things went wrong last season. And a few of them I felt could have been managed a lot better by the coaching staff. This upcoming season is a complete mystery to me.
We did, we slacked off on hitting which caused us to be out of football shape and certainly explains poor tackling but I promise they still lifted, ran gassers, ran protect the house stadiums, they still pushed the sled but he did back off on the hitting to get everyone to week 1 healthy, something I don't agree with. I don't think they would back off speed and agility stuff because that's not where you get hurt.
I had also heard about backing off contact/hitting. The oddity is that we played Kentucky to start the season, and played them down to the wire. Then beat the pants off NWSt at home. From that point on... we sucked butt. I would think limited contact leading into the season would effect the first couple of games... but the OL never looked anything but sluggish for the remainder of the season.
Regardless of the cause, we have to hope this unit is prepared right out of the box. Boise State, whether it's hot or not, are going to be ready. And McNeese is going to want some scalps. We better come out firing full throttle.
I agree we had lots of problems... I guess what I was getting at is even if every guy was in a little better shape we would still have been 4-8... And a lot of what people were seeing as slow and out of shape was guys not knowing what the hell they were doing. the majority of guys that I saw with their hands on their hips were on defense when we were getting pummeled and our offense was doing nothing, which is most likely to happen no matter how good of shape you are in.
Take this for what it's worth, but I was told by PLAYERS that the culture around the team was not the same. New recruits were entitled and lazy. First few years, team was a family with one goal - us against the world. Last year, Hud became much more of a player coach and attitudes went down hill. Also, dissension amongst coaches fueled the fire.
