Even though Elfrid was brought to Marlin's attention and wasn't discovered by him or his staff personally, one has to credit his decision in offering him a scholarship. I believe UL was one of two colleges to offer him a scholarship.

As for Shawn Long, I'm sure he could have transferred to numerous other LA schools. However, Marlin's recruiting efforts prior to Long accepting Miss St's scholarship locked up his transfer.

Two great gets and a couple of adequate players doesn't negate his overall poor recruiting efforts at UL.

Payton was a self made man. That's the truth.
Shawn NEEDED to be close to home. Could he have chosen Nicholls, SLU? Sure. UL was a no brainer.

I give Coach Johnson credit for scouting Payton and getting Coach Marlin to the Cajun Dome to watch him play in the state playoffs. Coach Marlin gets some credit for making the final decision to sign him.

Absolutely, I'm good with all that... But it's not the same as getting a 4 or 5 star that all the big boys want. It's not the same kind of recruiting. I guess what I'm saying is you can't compare him getting Payton to a WKU landing a 5 star... Payton grew into a star.

I hope this is rumor and not true. He hasn't earned a extension, but then it would have been granted by SF, who also hasn't earned an extension. You should get awarded for wins-loses, championships, and fan attendance.

Elfrid wasn't a top recruit. He was a guy who busted his butt in college and developed. Shawn Long, again, was a transfer. I think his point was why can't we attract higher profile guys here out of the gate rather than hoping for a Payton or hoping a Long transfers.

Any new information about OK St's PG Griffin transfer decision? It would be a nice get to have both Malik and Griffin suiting up in 2017-18.

No, not yet. Southern Miss among those waiting to see where Griffin lands. Can see Griffin getting the last scholarship or the Cajuns adding another big if they think he can help the program, although they feel good about their current bigs (Washington, Miller, etc.).
