ELFRID PAYTON
SHAWN LONG
Can you at least spell them right when you're trying to interject with "knowledge"?
For what it's worth:
Shawn went to Miss St, we got him by "chance" / "hardship". Never had a shot at him out of our backyard...
Elfrid was nothing special coming out of high school. He BLOSSOMED BIG TIME and put the work in. This isn't a "Marlin got him" situation....not even close.
So the question is, what has happened to basketball's recruiting?
The answer is Bob Marlin recruits Southland type talent that he tries to mold into a systematic player (speed, defense, etc.). Our days of long, athletic guards are gone.....
For now
It was between us and msu for Shawn ... he decided on msu then had buyer's remorse almost immediately.
I understand a lot of you don't care for Bob Marlin but let's at least be fair.
To be fair, his brother was in his ear trying to push him to a "big time" program. He also came back due to family issues.
I liked what Bob brought to the table, but he's wearing his welcome out. Our recruits are getting smaller and smaller. Our shooting has been atrocious. We have no big man to replace Long....should've been working on that since 2012 at least.
He needs to put up and earn his salary.....not hating
You're being more than fair ... I forgot about his brother. What happened with him after Shawn came to UL ... I don't remember anymore from him.
I still have hopes for bb and agree on the salary earning.
I was a believer when he first got here. Me and a few fellow posters went back and forth regarding Bob and his potential. I was willing to let him build off of the NCAA appearance, where others were able to forecast mediocrity.
I can admit, it's playing out that others vision of this program was a little clearer than mine.
You're right...his brother was never brought up again once he got on campus??? I love basketball and miss the days when we wouldn't lose a game in the Cajundome. Jessie Evans didn't put the best quality guys on the court but man they could play.
No, you got to give the guy credit where credit is due. I know Elfrid PAYTON flew way under the radar. Thats why you have to credit Marlin for finding a player that nobody else was even looking at. That's called good recruiting. And if you say he was mediocre before he got here then you have to acknowledge Marlin's role in developing him from a mediocre player to a #10 draft pick.
And the seeds for SHAWN coming here were planted before he even arrived at Miss. State. Shawn was talented enough that he could have gotten transfer offers from hundreds of schools. He ended up here because of the relationship our coaches developed with him. You got to give him the credit for that.
From what I hear Jerekius Davis and Malik Marquetti will be on the same level of Shawn and Elfrid.
Now all the other recruits, well, some of them have been duds. I'm not going to name names. That's also on Coach Marlin.
