  1. UL Basketball Josten Crow (2011-12) (2015-2021)

As much as assistant coach Gus Hauser will be missed, Louisiana men's basketball coach Bob Marlin said his staff's transition should be an easy one.

  2. UL Basketball Louisiana Officially Announces Hiring Of Josten Crow As Assistant MBB Coach

Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's basketball coach Bob Marlin announced on Thursday that Josten Crow was named assistant coach after spending the 2015-16 season as Director of Student-Athlete Development.

The hiring of Crow, a native of Houston, Texas, is subject to approval from the University of Louisiana Board of Supervisors.

Crow was a four-year letterwinner at Sam Houston State (2007-11) where he was coached by Marlin during the first three years. During his junior season, Crow helped lead the Bearkats to both the Southland Conference regular-season and tournament championships, along with an appearance in the NCAA Men's Basketball Championships.

As a senior, Crow was second on the team in both scoring (12.7) and rebounds (5.3) while dishing out 3.5 assists and was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-Region team.

"Josten Crow is a bright young coach who graduated in three years while playing for me at Sam Houston State," Marlin said. "After his graduation he joined our staff as a graduate assistant and completed his MBA. He then played professionally in Germany for three years and returned to UL last season as the Director of Student-Athlete Development.

"His knowledge of our program will make a smooth transition for both staff and players. Josten's positive attitude and energy will continue to be an asset for our team. I'm excited that Josten will remain a part of our staff."

Crow served as a graduate assistant at UL during the 2011-12 season before playing professionally overseas for three years. He played in the top two levels of professional basketball in Germany for the Crailsheim Merlins, playing for two years in the ProA (second-level) league before competing in 2014-15 in the BBL (highest level).

During the past three summers, Crow also served as Head of Athletics for the Greatness Factory - an individual and team-training center based in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

Crow earned his Bachelor's degree in three years from Sam Houston State, obtaining a degree in Business in 2010. He earned his MBA from SHSU in 2012.

"It's truly God's blessing to be a part of the Ragin' Cajun family in this capacity, and I'm extremely excited for the opportunity at hand," Crow said. "I'm very grateful to Coach Marlin and Scott Farmer for a great opportunity to work and learn from someone that I have a ton of admiration and respect for.

"(Assistant coaches) Neil Hardin and Kevin Johnson, Ryan Welty and Mike Murphy have made this transition as smooth as it could be, and I am very appreciative of them, as well as the entire Ragin' Cajun athletics staff. I look forward to assisting in the continued success of our program."

Everyone I talk to says he is a nice guy.

In the wake of him making this decision, the question becomes ...

Can UL upgrade from this event?

At this point, this is Dr. Maggard’s acceptance of mediocre for the men’s basketball program. He makes the excuse that their is minimal talent in the SBC. I hate to tell Bob Marlin, but if football and softball can find talent and coach them to win so can he. It’s time to transition to a winning coach with an energetic personality. Bob Marlin is too narcissistic and will not lead us to even be competitive in the SBC. Dr. Maggard’s loyalty needs to be the RCAF, student-athletes and fans. I trust him to make an excellent coaching hire as he has done in the past.

Let's just cut to the chase. There is no real standard with the basketball program. When a coach has to throw your nationally ranked football team under the bus as a way to cover up a sorry loss to the last place team in the conference ("The West division is pretty good. This isn't football where teams aren't very good."), that's when you know the writing is on the wall that the expectations are almost nonexistent. To this day, I am still baffled at that postgame comment.

In spite of the struggles of baseball right now, Matt Deggs straight up apologized recently to the fans and said that this is not the standard of Ragin' Cajuns Baseball. That's the difference right there of why fans will still give baseball a chance to improve while not even knowing when the basketball games are anymore. And it has nothing to do with "basketball being dead in the south." It has everything to do with standards.
