I think his retention rate has been less than reasonable. But, what I don't know... is whether what we (he) has experienced is normal to schools within our basketball peer group. Everyone keeps tallying up (and then arguing over) the people that have left the program in one way or another since Marlin arrived. That does not tell me anything about whether that's common to other similar programs or not. And only knowing that would allow us to say it's above, below or average.

    I 100% agree with this.

I never said the coaching staff was not a factor in people leaving. In some cases they are the major factor as they did not offer players a returning scholarship. Guys like Soto and Kamber fit that bill. That is a recruiting issue, not a retention issue. Giving a guy a scholarship and then pulling it after one year indicates your judge of talent was off. In the cases involving suspensions, it is not surprising players don't return as they probably figure the underlying issues will linger. Andrews, JJ Thomas, and Hedgeman fit that bill. Then there is someone like Heyward Register who believes he will benefit by going away from home for their last year. Staff and family agree with that view. I don't know what is normal for folks leaving but it is increasing everywhere. It has been over 700 the last few years. I recently read an article stating that it will be over 800 this year which averages to about 2.5 players per school.

The other side of the coin are the players who think the world of the staff. Josh Brown, Elfrid Payton, Bryant Mbamalu, Kasey Shepherd and others including Shawn Long are in that category. They believe the guys in charge of the program helped them grow as players and into young men. As Just1More stated, lots of gray in this situation.

Going forward, I recently spoke with a staff member about the view of next season. They are really looking forward to it. They think they will have a lot of fun proving a so many people wrong. I don't know what will transpire next year but that attitude is one I would hope they have at this stage.

Well I would hope you can find a handful of kids who like the staff out of 80 or 90. Shawn sat several games for "violation of team rules"... A lot more than all the rest combined, he was never sent packing. Not sure what else you would expect the staff to say? We aren't very talented, we haven't been recruiting well, a guy we were excited about doesn't want to be here...we will be lucky to win 10 games? But hey go prove me wrong and win the SBC championshiop crown and tourney...or get an at large. Nothing else will prove anybody wrong....finishing 4th and getting elimated in the quarters or semis don't cut it. I hope for the guys that are actually here
That no other "issues" come up before the start of next season so they might actually have a chance. It isn't gray for me... Like I said earlier... No need to air things on here now, he isn't going anywhere.

Issues like missing curfew certainly do not warrant being "sent packing", while issues involving law enforcement may...

The blanket negativity doesn't jive with all the supposed well wishes for a smooth, uneventful off-season and upcoming year.

Like Turbine said- closer to never Marlin than always Marlin...

Marlin punishing anyone for being late is about as funny as it gets.
It isn't blanket negativity, I'm trying to discuss why our basketball program loses kids at a higher rate than most and at very weird times and reasons. You can't without one of his defenders shoving sunshine up your ___ telling you everything ok, Marlin does it right it's just bad kids or bad luck... We are mediocre. Marlin has been mediocre here... And A LOT of it is his own doing. Let's just earmark this thread and revisit it when his contract is up. Marlin knows what villagers he needs to keep pleased around here to do his bidding for him. He isn't stupid. The players and the fans deserve better.

My opinion is that he has a retention and recruiting problem. Like CC said, there are too many players to try to name over the last 5 years to even do the argument justice as it feels like we have had a revolving door of players entering and leaving this program, many of which leave before they even get a chance to be a contributor. Jerekius Davis wanted to leave and he is looking at a promising year where we will rely heavily on him, hopefully, and playing time should not be an issue at all. Hassani Gravett was another guy who was looking to be a big contributor here and decided to leave after redshirting.

A lot of speculation of why guys are disciplined different ways, and the reasons players leave are many. In every case, the staff never goes public with the exact reasons, but there is a difference between, let's say, missing study hall and having hooch in a locker room.

The Hedge situation reminds me a little of the Southall situation years back, except Hedge is done from the get go.

We aren't talking about walk-ons hanging it up or leaving because of lack of minutes. You have guys with 4 years of starting ahead then wanting to leave.
Actually, those schools really don't have attrition problems. Kentucky has issues with guys leaving early for the draft but its not common to see them have players transferring out or just not panning out in their program to which they leave.

That's why is said it's a different kind of attrition..losing a one and done to the NBA or early draftee is still attrition but usually means you are doing something right. those schools reload.

What expectations? He was a decent rotation player in his first year in D-1 ball and was looking down the barrel of a season for which he would be heavily relied upon?
