I have never been a Marlin basher, but I agree retention has been an issue. A few more during his tenure that I haven't seen mentioned Davenport, Kevin Brown, Matt Moss, Cornell Barnett, Darnell Jackson, Javan Mitchell, and I think Courtney Wallace left mid season Marlin's first year as well. I'm not saying these are all his fault as there has to be a variety of circumstances, it the fact that underclassmen have left the program at an alarming rate can't be denied.

Kevin Brown left after graduating. He left as a fifth year senior with a year of eligibility remaining. He went to UNO where he was a starter. He realized Jonathon Stove would play ahead of him and that was one reason he left. When a guy leaves with a degree in hand, I view that as a successful tenure here.

when you can't recruit your retention rate can't be average. If you are a solid recruiter you can deal with it a little more because you can go get others...when you finally land a quality kid you can't let him leave. We lost a kid because he "wasn't good enough"...he just committed to South Carolina. Davis has all he could want in front of him as far as playing time just sat out a year yet he was willing to leave and sit out another year or transfer down. Like I said earlier you can be naive if you want... Not all attrition is the same...the way you lose guys matters.

The truth is somewhere in the middle, but if given only two options, I'd venture "never Bob" is far more accurate than " always Bob."

A whole lot more "never bob" going on around here than "always Bob". Bob Marlin is not some unlucky innocent bystander in all of this. What is going on isn't "normal" or ""average" I hope more than anyone he turns it around but unless he drastically changes what he is doing and how he goes about recruiting and handling his players it's only a matter of time.

By my count...if I didn't miss any...19 transfers, 3 quit and 3 non-qualify...another was just begged to stay and we are a long way from November. No way of knowing how many recruits we missed on because of issues, basketball is probably the biggest word of mouth sport there is.

I think his retention rate has been less than reasonable. But, what I don't know... is whether what we (he) has experienced is normal to schools within our basketball peer group. Everyone keeps tallying up (and then arguing over) the people that have left the program in one way or another since Marlin arrived. That does not tell me anything about whether that's common to other similar programs or not. And only knowing that would allow us to say it's above, below or average.
