None of us know what happened with Hedgeman and Marlin and whether the kid had become some sort of cancer to the team but if he was in good standing and was cited for a misdemeanor, that is not a reason to kick him to the curb.
Hedgeman was released due to an incident that happened on the Texas road trip back in early February. I don't know the details of what occurred then, just that was the time frame. I am fairly certain law enforcement was not involved then however. In these situations, our coaches have always helped place athletes at other schools. In this case, it would likely be a non D1 school so as he would not have to sit out one year. I don't know if the most recent incident will make that more difficult. It does not help that effort however.

And that's fine. But some on here want to say Marlin "recruited him" and blame it on him. Can't have it both ways

Marlins program has a player retention problem, Jay hedgemen getting a possession charge doesn't change that in anyway at all.

And this is my point Mike. To think that a misdemeanor arrest for Marijuana should automatically necessitate a release is not something I'm in favor of. Like I said, I don't know the details of everything that has gone on with him, I was just mentioning that in regards to previous posts.

You and CC are both right IMO. I don't particularly agree with that concept when a kid gets in trouble or didn't pan out that its automatically the coach's fault. Its one of those comments that typically tells me that they are looking to blame the coach, no matter what the case. However, in this case CC is right in regards to player retention. This is the biggest issue most of us who believe Marlin has overstayed his welcome and that his inability to recruit and more importantly, keep the recruits you do get.

I bet most forget the big juco center we lost before the season started. Stalcup I believe was his name.

The NCAA only comes in and tests a random sample 2-3 times per year. Most schools will do (street drug) tests in between and typically handle any issues internally before anything goes public

NCAA tests are obviously handled differently

Admittedly, we've lost so many I can't remember most of the names.

Hedgeman was suspended (not released) by Marlin for the rest of the season for violation of team rules.

Hedgeman asked for his release. It was granted.

Now Hedgeman gets a summons for possession.

And some of you have a problem with coach Marlin for this???

If you coached a team that had a player get arrested for marijuana, would you do nothing?

Please tell me the difference between possession of marijuana and being arrested for underage drinking.

Both are illegal. Both are misdemeanors.

No I have a problem with people thinking jay hedgemen getting a possession charge equals Marlin not having a retention problem and can't wait to come here and suggest that. You are right, I don't think either offense is very different...neither would deserve dismissal unless it's repetitive..both are things young people get caught doing everyday. This incident does not negate the fact another highly thought of player just had to be begged to stay, that it's always something else or the kids fault...but apparently never has anything to do with guy in charge of the program.

Although the issue may or may not be exactly the same, this marijuana related summons is new and not directly related to Hedgeman's February suspension.

His charge and Marlin's retention problem are exclusive of one another in this case. I don't think either has anything to do with the other.
