Opinion here and a matter of semantics as well, Coach Marlin is not "awful" at his job. Awful does not have three consecutive winning seasons (all three were winning seasons when you count only D1 games as well). Mediocre was used to describe his tenure earlier. That is more accurate as to me mediocre means, not bad-but also not good. Being slightly above 0.500 in D1 games fits that description to me. Awful would be continually having 10 and 20 seasons. Again, your view depends on how you define subjective terms like awful and mediocre. If "awful" is being slightly above 0.500, how would one describe being well below 0.500. Also, several players will graduate from this year's team soon. Although that does not matter to the huge majority of fans, it is in his job description and it does mean something to the administration.
I can see that viewpoint. However that is what the market bears today. I believe Coach Marlin is right in the middle of the pack of what SBC coaches earn and he is slightly above the middle of the pack in accomplishments. Someone with more knowledge or time than I could look up the salaries of the league's coaches. If they did, I believe my presumption would prove to be correct.
