In the mid 80's there wasn't a fence completely around the lake and the gators would get out and sun themselves. Back then no one thought much of it. I had a habit of taking a short cut around the side of the lake opposite the student union. It was a well worn trail and I was looking down not paying attention until I heard the hiss. Luckily we seemed to come to an agreement that I would walk around him rather than getting tail whipped.
