Georgia State, with their 19-18 record, will not help much. Florida will help tremendously, because we not only pick up their record for our OWP (50%), we pick up everybody they have played to that point (Michigan, Auburn, LSU, etc.) for our OOWP (25%). Any win against Florida will also give the bonus points for top 25 non-conference victories.

A headcount sport requires that every player receiving financial assistance from the University is counted as a full scholarship; scholarship numbers vary by sport, even by gender. I would assume that if baseball and softball were made headcount sports, the scholarship limits would be in the neighborhood of 25 for baseball and 30 for softball.

The danger to us lies, not in the fact that 25 or 30 scholarships cost more than 11.7 or 12 [the current baseball and softball limits, each of which can be split among several players], but that now Arizona and Florida and Michigan and Oklahoma and other P5 schools have 30 each, and they WILL get some of our better players because of conference factors, among other advantages offered by such schools. Better living conditions, fewer bus trips and generally better support facilities and personnel are just some of those.

I agree that Georgia State's record isn't great and neither is their #57 RPI - but it's not too bad, especially when you look down the road. In fact, it's the best Sun Belt RPI outside of South Al. I know it's about who you play, but I was surprised to GSU's RPI that high with their record.

Georgia State will help our RPI [assuming we win]. First, it will be on the road, so we get the road win bonus. They were 15-13 OOC, so that will help some, or at least be neutral; and the OOR for us through them is pretty good [They have played Oregon, Cal Poly, Indiana, Utah, Notre Dame, Alabama, Auburn x 2 and Boston College; all in the top 100.]

Good point VOb....thanks for explanation.....although im not so sure they arent already pulling wool over our eyes. If a baseball player is currently on academic scholarship they dont count, yet there is no consistemt criteria to ensure all (esp power5) arent giving these alleged academic scholarship to players who arent performing academically. Look at david price, national player of yr, yet was on academic scholarhip with 2.6 gpa at vandy. How would we ever know if vandy did or didnt turn away a more deserving student who deserved that scholarship more, even if only with a 2.7 gpa in that instance

Keep in mind that Georgia State started at #39 when the first rankings came out two weeks ago, and they will have a losing record, probably, after they play us this weekend. South Alabama has jumped from #62 to now #44, fifth in the conference, now second. UTA & Troy still have a better overall record than USA, but the Jaguars have played a better schedule, that's why they have a better rpi score than the others.

Softball still has not implemented the road bonus/home penalty into the rpi formula. It's still bonus points for top 75 non-conference wins and penalties for bottom 75 non-conference losses.

But every conference game GaSt lost, another team we play in conference won; so that is a wash.

I thought that had been done when they eliminated the in conference bonuses for top 75. If not, the win will still help us, just not as much.

If a player is on academic scholarship granted by the University or its affiliates, the scholarship is charged as an athletic scholarship. Only independently granted and administered academic scholarships [like TOPS, or a SLEMCO scholarship] do not count toward the athletic total. ALL schools in non-headcount sports try to get players who meet one of two criteria; 1. They are smart and have an academic scholarship from an entity not related to the school, or 2. They are poor, and qualify for a Pell Grant..

Auburn (3), Michigan (1), Alabama (3), and LSU (3) are not exactly the bottom feeders of hitting.

Pretty sure there are still bonuses for top 25/50/75 base RPR wins and bottom 25/50/75 base RPI losses, but they are only applied for OOC games. They were lobbied to remove those and institute a home/away factor instead but it didn't happen.
