T-how is this different from the lower tier bowl games such as New Orleans Bowl--we only make money/cover our cost based on tickets sold.

As VO stated, all bowl games require you to pay for a ticket allotment up front. But, you are not paying to host a game and you are not being rewarded for being one of the top 60 programs in the country. Again, I have no problem playing the game to reward the fans and players if it pays for itself. But let's not pretend it's not a buy in to a tournament.

I am not T, but it is different in the sense that there are alternatives in basketball which do NOT require a buy-in. There are none in football.

Win 80% of your games in hoops and you will likely be in either the NCAA or the NIT. Win 80% of your football games and you will be in a bowl that your only source of income is ticket sales.

It is for every bowl game right? There is no buy in for the NIT or the NCAA.

I understand what you are saying, but you are fronting $50K with the hopes of recouping as you advance, that my friend is buy in. It may not be the term people want to use or hear, but it's the same as buying into an investment, just with the promise of a better return. If it wasn't a buy in then you would not be fronting $50K to host a game unlike the NIT.

isn't there upfront costs for every game? or anything an entity does in general, have to hire concessions workers, ticket takers, security, game officials, every single game has upfront costs. even the academic year has upfront costs, the teachers are hired even if the students don't show up. let's get on with it!
