Thread: Not so good pub in the Beaumont Enterprise...

Came across this article the other day and wanted so share. I know there's always two sides to every story but this is never the kind of article you want to see written about us in a paper that a lot of high school athletes read. Wish we would have handled it a little better. Thoughts??

    Recruiting is a tough business.

I agree and have no problem with pulling the offer. It happens and the writer even explains we needed to the JUCO route. Just seemed like our coaches could have done a better job handling it and responded and not burned bridges..but again this is also just one side of the story.

This happens all the time, both ways (kids changing schools, schools changing kids). What's special about this one? The whole process is ____ed up, but we didn't invent it.

What more can the coaches have done? They called a rescinded the offer because we needed to go juco...there is no better way to handle that IMO. There is no way to do that and leave the kid feeling good about the situation. If he finds another FBS home you never hear of this and the article isn't written...our coaches would have done everything the same. He ended up at FCS so we screwed him over.

I find the recruits complaint interesting. He DECOMMITS from Tech to play for us, and when we decommit from him, he is crushed. Ethics and character apply both ways. I don't mean to soften what we did in any way. As Z said, recruiting is a tough business. I only mean to point out the irony and perhaps a bit of the hypocrisy in this situation.

Makes sense. I have no clue how these processes normally end up. I'm basing all of this on the coaches comments and the fact that this article was written in the first place. I do not even feel bad for the kid. Just wondering, like Charlie mentioned, what makes this so special ? Maybe Cajun T can shed some light on this.

"ULL's treatment of Beverly might have irreversibly ended ties with Beaumont's largest high school, which will send 13 players to the college ranks next year. After realignment takes effect in the fall, West Brook will be the area's only Class 6A school.
Flanigan said he called ULL's head coach for an explanation but never received one.
"I told their athletic director that, as far as I'm concerned, ULL can skip right on by West Brook," Flanigan said. "I don't want to see them and they better not come to my office."

IMO I'm ok with pulling the offer bc unfortunately that is common. But Hudspeth, at least take the high school coaches call and stand next to your decision (assuming he's telling the truth in the article).

I agree...take the call, but that usually won't end well either. Yeah coach, we found somebody better or decided to go a different route..sorry....anybody think that's really gonna end any better?

You're right about the outcome, but pulling an offer is a big deal, to the player/family and the high school. You take the call as the face of the program and face the music.

Kids do this ALL THE TIME to Universities. It's an ugly game. I think they could tweak this whole recruiting thing a little to keep kids from "dancing for cash". These kids stay uncommitted to get showered with trips and college gear. They then only commit when someone can do something someone else can't. There's very little loyalty these days...
