Thread: GAMEDAY! Louisiana v Little Rock

From my count, our defense gave them 14 lay ups...mostly uncontested. We'd lose a guy...and he'd end up getting a pass as he was slashing to the goal for a lay up.

On offense, by my count...with 4 minutes left in the game...we did not have 10 points from outside 18 feet from the goal. That's when Wron finally hit a couple 3s.

They beat us from both sides.

They seemed to be quiker than us. They also hit several 3s with our guys right in their face.

Doc, Lil Rock did exactly what they wanted to all night long. Bring the ball down, hold the ball until 10 seconds left in the shot clock, run the pick and roll, and score. They knew they could get their shot anytime they wanted. The prayer shots are inconsequential. Other than momentum killers (which many don't even believe in), none of those shots put the game out of reach.

I saw Shawn look over to the bench multiple times. The staff was telling him to show on the shooter/ball handler on the pick and roll, and as soon as he would step up, the player rolling the rim would be wide open. He seemed to be frustrated and arguing with the staff. I agreed with Shawn, because #13 had not proven he could make the shot consistently when our bigs would sag off of him.

Lil Rock is well coached. To steal a line from VOB, their spacing was perfect all night. Their guards were far and away better than ours, again. Jay Wright had another forgettable night when the bright lights were on. I'm starting to believe he tenses up in pressure situations and games.

I don't fault our players. I thought we played hard. Big ups to Jon Stove for a gutty performance.

Our 4 and 5 players were 9-13 from the field, 3 players were 8-14, 1 and 2 players were 4-22. Part of the guard problem was a bad night shooting. Most was the static nature of our offense. We have little movement away from the ball, making us easier to guard, our spacing was not always good, and our guards do not have good court vision. We are late to deliver nearly every pass.

Back when we learned Shawn was coming back, with all the other returnees this should have been our year. It's not, it won't be, and we are stuck with a coach that has reached his pinnacle. He is the Ricky Bustle of basketball. All you have to do in Lafayette is be semi good to draw a respectable crowd. We tank these next two, back to 1500 at the next home game.

Our PG, who took the most shots of anyone, and our 3 point specialist combined to go 1-15 from the field and 0-10 from 3.

    There's your ballgame.

If those 2 guys just have a bad game instead of an atrocious one, we win.

Overall, I'm impressed with LR (good team and well coached). Unfortunately, outside shots that would normally drop for us, just didn't. Our defense hustled, but they were getting schooled. We lost assignments and allowed uncontested lay ups and dunks. I've seen few teams coached so well in kissing the ball off the glass as well as LR.

Another failure defensively was we needed to hammer LR with some hard fouls. We had fouls to give and never punished anyone for crashing the board.

I don't even think twice about the final play. I'm not questioning Stove's attempt. I probably would have faked penetration and kicked it over for a 3 from Wronk... but that's hindsight and wishful thinking.

Bottom line to me is you can't shoot that bad from the outside and expect to beat LR. We were extremely fortunate to have a chance to tie it and go to OT. I'm looking forward to getting back on track and playing well in the tourney.

    Wronk wasn't in the game...which I didn't understand

All fact. We had a balance of outside shots that were both fronted and some that were open looks... and nothing dropped for us. There's every reason to respect LR's team, but our ice cold outside shooting... with just average percentage success... would have won the contest... oddly.

Yep. I was there. After Wronk dropped two bombs in a row to get us back in the contest, the next time up the floor he wasn't even given a glance. When you're as cold as we were, we should have fed Wronk the pill until they stopped him. How he wasn't in the game on that final play, as a decoy at the very least, puzzled me.

Attendance around 5300 officially... But they don't count the free entries (kids with jersies and kids with Young Ragin' Cajuns Card). I think there were close to 7K this evening...
Almost every three we took was not closely contested. We just missed um. Had nothing to do with their defense. They protested the paint limiting Long.
