Thread: How many of you identify as "the baseball crowd"?

Very interesting thread/poll. For a former "basketball school", it's kind of a shame to see how interest (on this board at least) has dropped so much. It seems to be reflective of the attendance though, so it's not too shocking. More of a surprise to me is how baseball is nearly twice as big of a focus of this board as football. I knew there was a lot of baseball talk and interest (and deservedly so), but I was still surprised by the disparity. I selected football & basketball (my first taste of Ragin Cajun sports was Bo Lamar, et al's last semester - that was a ROCKIN' time!). I actually am interested in all sports at UL, but have spent more time at FB & BB games. I did attend the 1st Regional the baseball team hosted & made the trip to Omaha (vs. Stanford). That was a great experience as well!

It's a small sample size, but it is interesting how support is spread out in different sports on this board. Given the lack of success and tradition in football over decades, its not surprising that baseball is the most favored of UL sports. I like many missed the Bo Lamar era, so I don't have an attachment to the quote basketball school mantra, my attachment came later during the Andrew Toney era. Football is what drove my interest in UL when I was old enough beginning with the Roy Henry teams. My interest have always been Football, baseball and basketball in that order. But I also have enjoyed softball and believe in rewarding success. We are fortunate to have good programs and opportunities to support them in Lafayette.

T, my great UL basketball experience was also tempered by the next semester's FB team going 0-10 in Russ Faulkinberry's last season. However, my dad played college FB & was a HS coach (including HC at Northside HS), & I played football (& basketball & track) in HS, so I was raised on FB. That is my main sport. But I do love UL & like all of the other sports here too!

I put basketball crowd, because I really want to be a fan of Cajuns hoops . I just wish our coach and AD had higher aspirations than getting a bye in the conference tournament and scheduled OOC accordingly.

I give credit to coach for our road schedule this year, but he gets an "F" for the home OOC schedule.

For those of you surprised by the responses, you must consider that we are not in football season, but had a poor prior season. The poll started in the middle of a nice MBB run... but MBB popularity is declining. And baseball is ready to launch a very promising season... following two fantastic seasons.

The timing of a poll/question, and the circumstances at the time will weigh heavily on the outcomes. Plus, MAT titled the thread "how many of you identify as the baseball crowd"? Some non baseball first folks probably ignored the thread altogether. If just before the football season starts, a thread popped up with "how many of you identify as the 'football crowd'"... you'd see a significant difference in total results. Just sayin...

Year round! But public strutting doesn't start until the warmer weather arrives. It just looks too silly for someone my age to wear a thong with a winter scarf in public. People point and whisper about the obvious seasonal mismatch in clothing combinations.

I'm up here in DFW strutting mine. Stogie in one hand, G&t in the other. Mine is made out of BEVO. Cost a bundle!

Turbine feel free to change the title of this thread.. J1M brings up a good point, as "the baseball crowd" title came from a comment that RB made on the radio.

Now that the conversion has evolved, I would prefer a more generalized title. Don't want to manipulate anyone over to the baseball side..

I like to watch the "top talent" in the country on the field, and baseball and softball is where you will find it. No better athletes and coaches than in these two sports. Both are nationally ranked.

There is likely not a player on either baseball or softball who will have the level of professional success that Elfrid Payton or even Shawn Long will have. If you are just talking about collegiate success, EP was national defensive player of the year his last year here, and Shawn is the national leader in career double-doubles. Except for Lexie Elkins, no one on either baseball or softball is likely to match either of those.

Now, the talent in the coaching box is another story. Mike is the among the best in the business, and Tony is at or near that as well. Bob is... well.... mediocre.
