In my opinion the truth is that he is good at taking each individual hitter and playing to their strengths. Sometimes that is a split-grip but not always. There is certainly a reason others can't teach his technique. It's because they don't understand he doesn't have "a technique".
What is common to all the hitters is watch their practice swing routine in the on deck circle or when they are in between pitches. They all clear the rear hip with the hands making a dropping/chopping motion with the bat head. Where the hands are on the bat varies.
