Thread: Long Sweeps His Way To State, National, SBC Awards

  1. Default Long Sweeps His Way To State, National, SBC Awards

After averaging a double-double and helping the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns men's basketball to a pair of Sun Belt Conference road victories last week, Shawn Long was bound to earn some weekly accolades on Monday for his performance on the court. He did.

    Congratulations Shawn!
"Long, who was selected as the Sun Belt Conference and LSWA Men's Basketball Player of the Week, was named the CBS Sports National Player of the Week on Monday, joining a list of recipients that includes two-time winner Buddy Hield of Oklahoma, Michigan State's Denzel Valentine, Brice Johnson of North Carolina, Grayson Allen of Duke and BYU's Kyle Collinsworth."

This is a tremendous honor for Shawn. When I saw he was named NATIONAL player of the week, I went wow. I thought only guys who played in Baton Rouge were eligible for such an award (not meant to be a slight on Simmons who is a great player and seems to be a good guy). This is a tremendous honor for Shawn and good recognition for our program.

I spoke with coach Marlin tonight and noted one thing that hasn't happened much is Shawn getting into foul trouble (hope I didn't jinx him.) I asked if that's because he's doing a better job fundamentally on defense or getting the benefit of the doubt from officials since he's proven how good he is.

Coach said both. He said Shawn has worked very hard to be a better defender...but he also has the respect of officials.

    R. J. Hunter....Courtney Lee. Those are two guys who always seemed to get the benefit of the doubt. In retrospect, it's probably because they earned it.
