Well I would do whatever was cheaper. Renovate Blackham or build Shipley Arena.

In starting from scratch, I imagine the first step would be digging a hole. Then, couldn't we sell all of that dirt? Also, leasing of suites would offset the price as well. I think this could be done in a reasonable time frame once we complete the Master Plan as much as we can.

Look at renovating Blackham. The structure is sound. To make it the best basketball facility possible would not take Herculian efforts.

Drop the floor. Dig it out low enough to where the seating is as clost to the floor as possible.

Put chairbacks in place of benches.

Build in suites along the top.

Completely redo bathrooms, concessions, and locker rooms.

I'm sure there are other things to do, but you get the idea. No way a renovation would cost as much as Northern Iowas facility.

The thing that UNI, Wichita, and the rest of the MVC schools have going for them is their conference RPI. The MVC has the model for raising your conference RPI. The SBC presidents AND basketball coaches refuse to commit to those changes.

Also, 2008 was a long time ago. The Stephens Center in LR was built around then too. They got a lot of bang for the buck at 26 mil. But not the kind of bang we'd be looking for, especially with Melrock's design.

My understanding is to renovate BC you would need to replace the ceiling/roof. You would not be able to hang the type of scoreboards that are used today with the TV screens and such without replacing the roof. If you have to replace the roof you have to replace the walls and such, cheaper to build a new one.

My design is a pipe dream and I do not expect it to ever happen. That being said if we are going to dream dream big. Hopefully I will hit the lottery one day. I guess I need to start playing the lottery if I want to win.

I think the focus should be bang for the buck and not duplicating things. This should be a basketball only facility. Suites, Seating, Court, Restrooms, Locker rooms, Concessions. Nothing else needed. The APC is right there. Make it seat about 7k.

I don't want a palace. I don't want a cavern. I want the Deaf Dome. I want Cameron Indoor. I want opposing teams to shudder at the thought of having to play in Shipley. I couldn't care less about amenities. I just wanna kick some arse.
