I've been involved with a couple of different private schools. I know for a fact one of them had a lot of kids who were getting financial aid and they were not playing sports. I was never aware of any athlete being offered financial aid strictly for athletic reasons.
I think this idea that high school coaches are going into kids living rooms and recruiting them to their school is overblown. I've personally never heard of anything close to this happening.
Now parents and alumni are a whole other story. If you want to define recruiting as a bunch of parents of eight graders talking about where little Johnnie is headed for high school and trying to influence a kid to go to a particular school then its rampant. The club sports are even crazier with the parents & coaches recruiting openly.
If you place teams in divisions based on ability the whole recruiting issue can go away. Who cares if they recruit.
