Gosh, I really don't want to go down this road, but...Our neutered leaders in BR always play the across the board cuts on higher ed. I'm glad UL isn't maxed out subsidy wise like the Rustoanians. We'll have to cut too, but didn't become dependent on the max like other ULS programs. Those guys may get bent over if the legislature quits the TOPS "find the ball under the shell game". Shuffling money from the state to the student to the university/state is smoke and mirrors.
ULM's hiring of McNeese State's Viator comes at a great time for us. We should be heavily favored to beat the Cowboys now that they'll be breaking in a brand new coach when we play them. A McNeese team still lead by Viator would have probably been favored over us.
Pure conjecture. Clearly you've got too much time on your hands.
Will ULM be better with Viator as their head coach?
Will McNeese be worse without Viator?
Will UL now be favored over McNeese when we play next Fall?
I think ULM will be much better, McNeese will be much worse, and that UL will be heavily favored to beat McNeese next Fall.
I honestly like Viator. If Hudsbeth would leave I would not mind having him as our head coach. I think ULM needs to rebuild, and get back to basics. Every coach they have gotten since they turned D-IA have been fired and were not successful at the D-IA level.
This guy is 77-33, and has had success in High School as well as College.
ULM is getting back to basics with this hire, they were successful at the D-IAA level, This hire is saying we need to go back to what made us successful, the time when we made it to National Championship at the D-IAA level and won.
Think GS and App St. has the same mentality, they are not changing how they play ball, they have built a tradition of winning. Why change success?
This coach will have a hard time, with budget constraints, fan support, and recruiting. He needs to tap into the Monroe market for high school players. You have the best high school football teams in the country, WMHS, Neville, Ouachita etc.. I think Matt Viator can do that because he was a high school coach, and knows how to get these kids in.
I don't think it was a coincidence that McNeese beat us and almost beat Nebraska. Somewhere down the line we are getting out recruited and having trouble in evaluating talent. If we are not, then Viator has won the recruiting war between McNeese and UL by building a rapport with these high school athletes.
Ulm admission standards are much higher than mcneese and he won't have those FBS transfers from p5's look to play immediately. I think he is a good coach but he will be faced with new challenges he isn't used to facing. He can't sell national championships anymore or ulm's winning tradition. App state and Georgia southern brought theirs with them to FBS.
