One bright side to this is the recruiting angle that we have the scheme we just need....... two CBs, 2 Safeties, 2 LBs, and 3 down guys----Come here and play for the great turn around!!!
If you gonna take a crap on the chefs plate, let him shop for his groceries. He had CB's playing safety, he had 1 pass rusher for half a season...best DL was a sophomore...best CB out all year.... Injuries that caused 12 different starting lineups, how is any of this on Melvin smith? Oh and our best DB since Bentley and white is currently committed to Melvin smith. I know everyone likes to sit behind their keyboard with their pitchforks but damn man...it was a down year, at a historically very bad football school in a bad conference...get over it. We aren't f'n Alabama. Sound like a bunch of f'n cold and hungry women.
This article is disturbing. Hopefully coach speak and fluff for the masses.
We're not competing with Alabama. We're competing with S Alabama who had no football a ten years ago.
Chef needs to shop at full service groceries before he can complain about the selection.
This historically bad program is much better than the myth. He's also been given tons more support than any coach we've had. He's had a lot to do with that.
Melvin smith? Do you want HUD to control the defense or not? Melvin smith did not recruit the guys you saw out there with the exception of maybe Mario Osborne. We ran a soft zone for 4 years, smith wants to run man... It was pretty clear to me Smith didn't have the groceries he needs to cool his meal. I don't know what all of you want, seasons over...4-8. We aren't changing that. The coach said he would get it fixed, let's see if he can. The staff isn't going anywhere so what's all the btchn about? HUD knows people are pst...what else you want? He already started parting ways with players...what else you want? It's basketball season...football is over, thank god. Or we can beat the horse until it's glue til next September.
They have some promising guys that redshirted, we have some guys coming back that hopefully can stay healthy. Sounds like they are going look for some immediate kjuco help. There is a stud CB dying to get on the field. 2nd year in the system and verbage. I said it earlier, I saw enough flashes to at least see what he can do with another year, another class and at least see the actual guys he recruited for his system. We saw Osborne and that's it...I sure as hell like what I saw there. The publicly said they were going get some juco help...they see what we see and are actively and even publicly trying to fix it. I just don't know what else people want right now.
I find myself repeating this over and again. Our problems defensively were not generally scheme. We stayed with press man well after all evidence indicated we couldn't manage it. That is on the DC. Our biggest problem though are fundamentals. Pad levels, getting off blocks, controlling gaps and running to the ball. We can't cover our own shadows. That, my friends, is defensive coaching. (With the possible exception of the coverage problems, which could be talent.). HUD only speaks to the press, and to us, in coachspeak, so it is hard to know what he really thinks of our defense. If he really thinks what he just said, I would be very disappointed.
If we brought in a OC to run the air raid and shortly into the season they realize we don't have guys to run the air raid...you gonna tell him to call a power run game? Something he doesn't know how to call? Then fire him after one season because you didn't supply him the guys in year 1 to run the air raid? We had growing pains from stuart to Willis and they ran the same scheme. How can you ask kids to buy in to your system and believe in it if you don't? ___ happens...and it just happened. We were a handful of plays from being 2-10...4-8...6-6 or 7-5. We changed an entire staff and system...not 1 defensive holdover. There was not 1 coach who could translate to the players the verbage from last year to this year...the entire system was Greek to them. it's hard to be fundamental when you are second guessing where you are supposed to be and what you are supposed to be doing.
