Hedge played D on stringbean Deng a lot in the 2nd and I think he was instrumental in shutting him down. We had some bad matchups against ulm at times but still managed to keep them in check. Roberson is a good player and Samuel could hurt you when left open. Adjustments coming out of the half were very effective.
We did step out of bounds every darn time. That was just sad on our part. And I think it was more than 3 times. It was the most frustrating part of the game. Didn't see any real protest of the calls other than Hedge's where he slipped and his legs extended out. But we got a quick foul on the hoax to negate that one.
The other thing at least TWICE coming out of time outs we promptly turned the ball over.
And our guys sometimes forget not to hand check.
Overall we played well, but these are the things that will get magnified on the road when calls don't go our way.
Given what we've seen in the dome this season, this crew was better than most. They easily could have impacted the outcome the last 5 minutes and OT but they didn't. Long was playing possessed and almost any rebound he played strong and physical. ULMost was gassed and grabbing mostly at air. The whistles stayed silent.
Agree on all fronts. The biggest disadvantage for Kaspar has been Texas State's lack of traditional hoops success (last winning season was 2003 and last NCAA tourney was 1997 with future Indiana Pacers F/C Jeff Foster). Defensively, Texas State is solid, but it's been a struggle on the offensive end. He hasn't had enough guys who can hit shots.
Kaspar lost assistants early in his tenure to New Mexico and Houston, respectively, and that made recruiting a bit tougher after those losses. He hired Kevin Brown's ex-AAU coach last summer and that's already resulted in the signing of a talented SG from Beaumont for next season. Kaspar's demanding, no-nonsense approach is also not appealing to all potential players and it will be tough to improve the talent level without better on-the-court results.
Fun fact: Kaspar and Little Rock's Chris Beard played for the same Texas Hall of Fame high school coach Mike Kunstadt (Kaspar at my alma mater, Corpus Christi Carroll High, and Beard at Irving High in the DFW metroplex). Beard also served as a GA under Kaspar at Incarnate Word.
Haven't heard so much chatter about Marlin having a hot seat since we have been winning?....
