This is a serious question. I ask because I do not know.

Once a kid signs his scholarship offer, what are the boundaries of the commitment from the university to the kid? Can the scholarship be revoked for bad behavior or for no reason at all? What about for performance reasons? What is the term of the commitment? One year, four years, five years? What if a kid gets hurt?

My meandering brain was thinking about the (unfounded) rumors that Hud had lost his locker room. Then I started thinking about what I would do if I were ever in that position.

If I remember correctly, the scholarship itself is year to year, but it looks really bad on a program if you yank a scholarship from a kid without a very legit reason.

Correct.... Scholarships are (4 or 5 year) 1 year contracts.

I'm sure like typical students there are rules governing behavior as well as grades. There is a statement on the NCAA info page that covers some of the question.

Can a coach cancel a student-athlete’s scholarship?

Depending on various circumstances, a school can choose not to renew or cancel a student-athlete’s scholarship*. The school has the choice to reduce or cancel the scholarship at the end of the period of the award. The school could also cancel the scholarship during the period of the award under the following circumstances:

Student-athlete becomes ineligible
Student-athlete commits fraud
Misconduct
Quits the team for personal reasons
