I think he is sketchy, but the man can coach defense. He is fiery and motivates his players to play above their heads quite often.

Just because someone coached in sec does not mean he can coach. Of course whenever to change your DC, much less your whole defensive staff, you take a step back before you see any improvement. This seems like a giant leap backward.

No doubt he has some issues but every where he goes good defense follows.

We completely changed what we do. I expected a step back, I just thought that the DL would produce a little more.

Our play at the S position has been poor. I didn't realize that NMSU was 15-39 on Saturday, that's pretty good, until you look at 4TD passes.

One of our safeties dropped two catchable interceptions. Did it last week too.

Their completions were nothing more than jump balls, and they took shots deep. Like everyone else we've played this year.

We have players with attitudes that just "don't want". DL is not good enough to run his scheme. We're playing Walkons at CB. We've changed our entire scheme in one off season. Kids are playing press man for the first time ever. What did you expect?

I can't tell if that was sarcastic or not. He may know Xs and Os (I can't tell to be truthful) but his dogged determination to play press man in all circumstances, and failure to adjust after failing at it so early and so often calls your statement into question. Further, that his D lineman cannot get off of blocks makes me wonder what you are seeing that I am not.

For the life of me, I can't understand why UL constantly plays with only 3 DL. It didn't work last year when they had two of the best DL (Ringo and Juice) in ULs recent history. I thought HUD might have recognized this issue when the Cajuns switched to a 4 man front during the bowl game and wrecked shop. I understand that LB crew is suppose to be our strength but the evidence is clear to anyone with a pair of eyes. A 34 scheme only works when you a dominant NT and those players typically don't land outside a P5 school.

Well when Smith was hired he told you he was going to play attacking style defense. Everyone in Lafayette was calling for it at the time, including me. I like the defensive scheme a lot. And if you haven't noticed, he has mixed in zone several times this year, only to find his players are LOST and have no idea what assignment football means. And again, injuries have crippled the scheme.

The idea of the 3 down lineman is not really accurate, because we almost always use and edge rusher. So yes, it's technically a 3 man front, but no, it doesn't work like one. We simply do not have the horses at DL.

Melvin Smith knows what he's doing.
