Thread: Cajuns just not quite good enough this year

  1. UL Football Cajuns just not quite good enough this year

    He didn’t appear overly angry.

He didn’t really seem to go out of his way to sugar-coat it either.

Instead, UL coach Mark Hudspeth simply appeared resigned to the reality of the situation following Saturday’s disappointing 37-34 loss to New Mexico State at Cajun Field.

Not seeing any signs that somehow next year will be better either. We're getting worse each game rather than getting better.

The foundation for this cluster mess lays right at the coaching staff's feet back in spring camp by failing to make a hard choice on QB and sticking to it. Did this staff all of a sudden go PC and worried about feelings instead of playing best man up?

I'm with you. After we lose the next 2 games to finish 4-8 and then get throttled at home to begin the season next year versus Boise St and Ryan St High, it will begin to remind me of the Baldwin years.

The Haack situation reminds me of the post-Desormeaux pre-Hud years when Bustle decided to start Masson over Mcguire despite Mcguire's success moving the ball when filling in for Desormeaux and continued success filling in for Masson. Which ultimately ended in a year in which we went 3-9 and won our last game after blocking ULM's extra point. At this point they need to seriously start thinking about playing Davis. There's no reason to still be playing next year's starter when the season is pretty much over while what may be your quarterback of the future stands on the sidelines doing hand signals instead of getting real game experience.

If we stick with the offensive play calling we saw in the 2nd half of last night game going forward. We will score a lot of points. With that being said, we have to get better at DL! We cannot continue to not get consistent pressure without blitzing.

We must get our big bodies in better shape. We are fat and slow at OL/DL this year. It has hurt us tremendously in the running game and passing game on offense. On defense our Interior DL have really struggled to shed blocks and penetrate. We fix that we will be ok.

Agreed. Hud's calling card is winning the line of scrimmage. We have not done much of that on either side of the ball this year.

Agree. It is not about who is at QB or what the play calls are. We stink because we are weak on the OL and otherworldly bad on the DL. If there is talent on the DL it is buried under mountains of body fat. Those guys have to recommit themselves in the offseason. We are going nowhere until those positions are addressed.

Agree. But how could this staff that prided itself on conditioning have allowed our linemen to get so out of shape? It's like someone got all stupid, going back to the dumb idea that it's better to weigh as much as a freight train regardless of how much it slows you down and exhausts you.

I don't think they are out of shape endurance wise. I feel like they added bad weight and lost a step. I like the old Broncos philosophy, 290-305 OL that could move. They cut block, pulled and were able to get to the 2nd level with ease. We can't do that.

I didn't think you could add "bad weight" and not lose endurance.

HUD is still experimenting with how to go about getting the team properly conditioned in the off season. I seem to remember him saying they went lighter this year in order to prevent injuries. It looks as though that plan backfired and I'd expect the guys to be put through the grinder this offseason.
