Louisiana's, Dane MechlerThe University of Louisiana-Lafayette water ski team won the Division 1 national title at the 37th Collegiate Water Ski National Championships, Oct. 15-17, at the Lakes at Cypress Hill in Cypress, Texas. The Ragin' Cajuns tallied 12,845 points in winning their first national team title since 2010 and sixth since the inception of the tournament in 1979. Florida Southern College finished second, its highest finish ever at the Nationals, scoring 11,965 points. Four-time defending champion Louisiana-Monroe, which tallied 11,375 points, placed third. Alabama finished fourth with 11,265 points and Rollins College was fifth with 8,720 points.

The University of Louisiana's water ski team won the Division 1 national title at the 37th Collegiate Water Ski National Championships at the Lakes at Cypress Hill in Cypress, Texas, held on Oct. 15-17. This is the first time the team has taken the national title since 2010 and their sixth since the team was founded in 1988.

The Ragin' Cajuns scored 12,845 points to take the title, Florida Southern College finished second with 11,965 points. Four-time defending champion University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM) added up 11,375 points to take third.

The UL team won every event, men's and women's slalom, trick, and jump, a first in championship history.

Individual medals for slalom, tricks and jumping were awarded based on athletes' placements within their division. Overall titles were awarded in each division to athletes competing in all three events.

UL athletes who won individual national titles in Division 1 were:

• ___ Taryn Grant (Canada), women's slalom (5-1/2 buoys at 38 feet off) and overall (1,675 points)
• ___ Christopher Wharton (Great Britain), men's jumping (171 feet).

Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns teams have earned national championships five other times: 1995, 1997, 2003, 2005, 2010.

The Division 1 field also included Alabama, Cincinnati, Florida Southern College, Grand Valley State, Iowa State, Kansas, University of Louisiana, ULM, Michigan State, Ohio State, Rollins College and San Diego State.

Thirteen teams competed in Division 2. National team champions were declared in both divisions. Western Washington won the Division 2 title, scoring 9,130 points.
This year's national contest was hosted and organized by the Lakes at Cypress Hill Ski Team and the Alabama and Texas A&M water ski teams.

The Ragin' Cajuns water ski team includes:

• ___ Men's team: Jaret Bill, Cole Grant, Dane Mechler, Brody Newton, Benjamin Stadlbaur, Jonah Shaffer, and Christopher Wharton;
• ___ Women's team: Giannina Bonnemann, Taryn Grant, Brittany Greenwood, Matilda (Matte) Mostrom, Madison Schneider, Julia Waitt, and Charlotte Wharton.

The women's slalom team members each placed in the top 10, with Taryn Grant winning with 5-1/2 buoys at 38 feet off, and Giannina Bonnemann coming in third with 3-1/2 buoys at 38 feet off. The men's slalom team had Dane Mechler and Benjamin Stadlbaur tie for fourth with 3-1/2 buoys at 39 feet off.
The men's slalom team won with 2210 and the women's slalom team won with 2255.
The men's jump team won with 2020 points, with 3 skiers in the top 10 and Christopher Wharton winning with a 151 foot jump.
The women's jump won with 2150 points and all five jumpers placing in the top 10 with Giannina Bonnemann coming 2nd with 147ft, Taryn Grant coming in third with 145 feet, and Charlotte Wharton taking fifth with 137 feet.
The women's trick team won with 2215 and the men won with 2095 points.

IMO there should be no points given to non mandatory sports, or ones that require outside competitors to have a NCAA champ. Still the Buba Cup.
