There is another factor at play here and that is injuries. We have been lucky prior to this season with injuries and we have been hit hard with that this season. We lost three WR's to injury in summer workouts and the defense has played virtually the entire year without Washington or Worthy. Add to that the recent OL injury and our luck of the past four years has been completely eradicated. If you want to argue that the lack of depth is a recruiting issue, I will accept that view. Also, not having Simeon Thomas is a factor in the type of defense the new staff wants to play. Note that that is also an issue. It appears some progress is being made in adapting to the new system. I was encouraged by what I saw from that unit in the second half at Tech and in the second and third quarters of the Texas State game. The Bobcats do struggle on defense as well but their offense had success in every other game they have played.

Some of the most devastating program injuries came under Coach Bustle. The issues we had with not being competitive against Akron and Tech were not due to the excessive injury situation. It contributed... but it was not the reason for the lack of competitiveness. It's tough to open the year with Kentucky... go down 21 points due to poor play... then come back in the second half in their stadium... and argue that we don't have the talent due to injury. We did not prepare well for the start of this season, knowing we're up against teams of a higher caliber than what we face in the SBC. It happens every year. And as much as it puzzles everyone that it could happen again... we could actually get the 7 wins this season and do our 8-4. Not likely... but almost as likely as we did it last year. All need to remember... we didn't get the 7 last year by dominating. We barely won some of those games. It only takes a ball bouncing funny one way or the other for us to win two more SBC games... or lose two more SBC games. But to be noncompetitive against Akron and Tech... that took deliberate failure.

I was in Tiger Stadium in 1972 with 4 seconds left on the Ole Miss 10 yard line LSU ran a 10 yard slant and Ole Miss broke up the play in the end zone.....a 10 yard slant play took 3 seconds to run......everyone around me were laughing their asses off. LSU won the game on the next play. At the Mississippi River Bridge in Vicksburg into Louisiana someone erected a sign on the Mississippi side that said..."
