Thinking outside the box.
Isn't that what this athletic department is all about??

It would be pretty odd to have him start against Kentucky... no matter how much better he is. I never saw that happening. Brooks and Jalen would have to seriously regress to allow a freshman to leap them as a starter. Regardless, Hud creating a competition to get them all mentally ready to take the helm... is really good. I believe Hud had to cut it to two at this point. He's also going to cut it to one in the next week or so. It may not be announced, and it may not be clear from practice... but he will have a starter in his head.
We are going to see the #2 QB in action this year. I have no doubt about that. And #3 better be ready at a moment's notice.
Yeah...DA definitely needs to find someone more competent than Buckley to cover our teams. Hell, if the Baton Rouge paper was able to assign someone as good as Luke, imagine what the "hometowns" paper should be able to get to cover the hometown team.
Should.,.if the Daily Rag actually gave a ____.
While Nixon did put in a solid effort in one series in the Nola, Brooks has showed more promise outside of the USA debacle. Brooks showed a ton of composure getting thrown into the Ga St game. UL was on the verge of losing that game until Haack orchestrated a scoring drive. I think that particular drive says a lot about the young man. Nixon's Nola bowl performance was a package that was thoroughly scripted and practiced prior to the game. While Haack was called off the bench, when the Cajuns was losing late in the game and still managed to lead a scoring drive. That showed a lot of character and talent.
As for Ray, if Hud truly plans for him to play QB for the cajuns then I would think it would be a waste for him to burn his redshirt for spot duty at another position.
I want the best passer to be the starter, whoever that may be. To soften up a defense you have to be able to pass down the field and keep the defense guessing. I love being able to run the ball because that's a vital part in keeping a lead and winning in the 4th qtr, but it doesn't have to be the QB. Passing gives us the chance to pull out wins where we might not match up athletically up front, and it helps you catch up when behind. We have enough players with break away speed to throw the ball down field some. We need the most accurate passer to get it to them. (my .02)
OK. This was Ga St we're talking about. One of the worst defenses in NCAA football. I'm not anti Haack, just pointing out the claims of greatness are in very small sample.
I do recall Hud went with a more traditional quarterback, Mason in the early season. He saw that legs are as important as arm going with Blain the balance of the season.
Hud's had both players their entire careers here yet is claiming undecided. If this is true he's looking for another to start.
I hope Hud and Jay are looking a lot harder at who has the absolute best ball distribution skills. I like QBs that recognize when they can tuck the ball and pick up good yardage. I do not like the idea of counting on the legs of a QB. We've injured a lot of QBs around this place by putting them into the ground game too often... and compromised our entire season.
Obviously, having a great passing QB that also has great wheels... is a benefit. But I think most collegiate QBs that have great mobility seem to never develope better passing skills. I think coaches are so happy to have the "dual threat" people to make their coaching lives easier... they lose what can massively dominate defenses... a great head with a great arm. And you only get that arm and head right if you use it massively. And it only works if you massively plan WRs, RBs, and TEs into the passing game. Opponents crap themselves when they see how well you distribute the ball. And with Elijah in the backfield, scare the crap out of defenses enough to keep them guessing, playing like our defense has for the past few years, will make Elijah pick up 20 yards before the first guy lines up behind him to attempt the chase. I don't want Elijah placed in a crowd. Eventually, we'll all be looking at the sidelines wondering why the trainers are checking out his ankle or knee.
We need to toss the ball around. When I think of having to cover Jamal, Gabe and Devon... with Elijah in the backfield... let alone the other skill people in at the time... it makes me shat myself. We need everyone afraid of our pass threat on every stinking down. I want them backing up and scattering like our 8 men lost in space past defense. We need to be the ones making opponent fans upset how they give us 15 to 20 yards to prevent 30 to 50 yard plays. This is OUR year for everyone to be afraid of our offense going short, middle or deep on any given down.
I like the idea of the running game being the strength and the focus. Too many 3 and outs on 3 pass plays keeps the D on the field too long. Our D the past couple of seasons needs to be able to stay off the field as much as possible since they haven't been good at getting off the field themselves.
