Thread: Report: Derrick Dooley new coach at Tennessee

You are to be commended for your brilliant post!! You obviously grasp what others here are not in that LA Tech is seperating themselves from us. The ones that are laghing and saying "karma is a _____" are the ones that are jealous and envious that a big time program offered their coach a job! And, if they say otherwise, they are lying to themselves!! One can only fantasize about that ever happening here with this program. As of now, this program is viewed as a coaching graveyard!! What a joke!!

I like what Tech's President is doing and I wish ours was more demonstrative about where UL athletics is heading and what it can do for our university. Give Tech credit, they do things to maintain separation from us and to prepare themselves for inclusion when the next conference realignment comes about, which could be sooner than we all think. Who knows? I just wish UL had the b*lls to do some of the things Tech has done. People can belittle Tech all they want and say their facilities suck and their town sucks, etc., but at the end of the day, they are much better branded as LA Tech than we are as Louisiana Lafayette, they are in a better conference, they market themselves better, have been to bowl games, have beaten numerous BCS schools, and are generally perceived better athletically and academically than UL. Rightly or wrongly. Tech will come out of this OK.

I guarantee it will slip---I remember Toby Warren and the decades ahead that he was thinking and doing---and I remember the vacuum that sucked the air out of our program upon his leaving!!!

I have to admit Rupp progressed Tech basketball quicker than I thought he would. Where do you think he might end up?

    Dooley's last three seasons...

    09 - 4-8
    08 - 8-5
    07 - 5-7

Wow! If the Tennessee fans were rioting after losing Kiffen... they will go freakin NUTS when they see what they've been left with.

He's GOT to have pictures of SOMEBODY!!

I'd watch for a lower-level BCS conference school. Auburn comes to mind, given that Lebo is likely gone after this season.

Tech should be able to get a good replacement. With Dooley going to a BCS school they have just shown that they are a stepping stone school to better things.

I don't know if I'd go that far. I think the last name and the SEC connections that come with that had more to do with it. If he was Derrick Smith with a 17-20 overall record coming off of a 4-8 season I don't think he would be getting a serious look much less getting the job.

I think that Tech will name VandeVelde permanent AD. And probably won't give him a raise so they can pay the new coach what they were paying Dooley.

Malzahn is a popular name, but don't rule out Jeff Bower....or Gary Crowton.

When was the last time a UL coach was snapped up by an SEC school? I think it was a bonehead move on Tennessee but it might make Tech more attractive to a good coach.

Is Tech really that much better than they were when Doooley took over? I know they sucked in 09 under his direction?!? This seems like a bad move for UT. _
I played golf with a Big U/T Booster yesterday when he got the TEXT. He was ill to say the least. He couldn't believe that they hired a coach with a losing record.
True Story, QUIT after 9 holes. Last thing he said was "I guess we will bring the whole Georgia Coaches up to Knoxville now (including Daddy). He was ill. Got to believe they are not pleased with the hire. JMO.

Exactly! I ran my Saturday run this morning with an LSU guy. He was actually laughing at Tennessee for making such a bonehead hire. We talked about what LSU fans would be saying right now if they had made the same hire and his comments can't be printed here. This is in no way a positive reflection on Tech (he had a losing record at a mid-major) as it was a desperation hire on Tennessee's part. To be a fan of a national power making such a light weight hire has got to be embarrassing.

I give him 3 years MAX... he will not be at .500... then they will be looking again!

The point is this pick is not a reflection on Tech. Its all about Dooley's SEC pedigree and connections. Lets keep this in perspective and not get all bent out of shape and start buying into the separation mantra.
