    Default WR Tyren Johnson?

I don't remember reading it on this board but I heard tonight that Tyren Johnson will join the Cajun FB team as a WR. I have to say I'm pretty excited about this news.

Tyren told The Daily Advertiser that he planned to play football back in August, if I remember correctly.

UL sports fans might see a familiar face from the basketball court playing football next season.

Current Ragin' Cajun basketball player Tyren Johnson told theadvertiser. com on Friday that there is a "70 percent chance" that he will join the football team asawide receiver for the 2010 season. By that time, Johnson will have exhausted his basketball eligibility but would still have one year to play football since he did not ever redshirt in college.

Johnson played quarterback, wide receiver and safety for state power West St. John High School, which won Class 2A state titles during his sophomore and junior seasons. The 6-foot-7, 205-pounder was a prep teammate of former LSU standouts Tyson J a c k s o n and Quinn Johnson.

"I love football, but I play basketball because it's easier," Johnson said while watching Friday's practice. "I think I could do it (play football). I've been thinking about it a lot. People back home have been asking me about it, and it's something I'm seriously thinking about doing."

Football runs in Johnson's extended family. Two of his cousins are current UL quarterback Blaine Gautier, who played at West St. John before transferring to Lutcher, and University of Tulsa wide receiver Damaris Johnson, a former Cajun recruit and Destrehan star.

UL coach Rickey Bustle said he knows who Johnson is but has not spoken with him about joining the football team next season. The regular season for college basketball ends in early March, which last season was about one week before the start of spring football practice.

"That's something that would be worth talking about," Bustle said. "The most important thing is that he would need to be out here in the spring."

The move from college basketball to college football is far from unusual.

Greg Paulus, who played basketball for four years at Duke, will suit up at quarterback for Syracuse's football team this fall. Former University of Miami forward Jimmy Graham has joined the football team as a tight end.

Tyren and Ladarius would give us two Gigantic recievers, probably the two tallest in the SBC. Nice security blanket for Chris, if he in fact wins the job next season.. Wouldn't it be interesting in Blaine and Tyren reunite for some big numbers in '10!

They're both from the river parishes but Blaine went to Lutcher and Tyren went to West St John. Tyren would be a tremendous asset if he can get in, learn the playbook and most of all: catch.

I doubt any team in the country has 6'6" and 6'7' receivers. Whether Johnson is good enough to play or even start is another matter.

Per Josh's article, they both attended W. St. John before Gauthier transferred to Lutcher. So they did attend HS together.

Hate to be a pessimist BUT.....

I'll bet money, or anything else for that matter that the kid never hits the playing field. Maybe he was just joking about the comment he made, I'm not sure but "I chose basketball because its just easier".

YAH, that kid will work hard for his team .
I've heard of the basketball team's motivation to work out and work hard in the offseason. They go through the motions in the weight room and they don't take it seriously. Because he is an athlete he will probably come in with a chip on his shoulder and not take it seriously.

I hope I'm wrong and he becomes a hell of an asset but...Anyone a gambling man?

I've watched Tyren Johnson all season be the only player to show consistency: good attitude, work ethic, and performance for that basketball team. THE ONLY ONE. I don't doubt his effort one bit.

You could be right, BUT, when Coach Lee called for an optional shootaround/practice, he is the only one who showed up. He appears to be the hardest working basketball player and leads by example. If he transfers that attitude to football and has any football talent, he will be a good asset.
