That said, where we more accurately disagree is on whether forfeiting the unique perception we have in college football. You can see the trouble we have already with people confusing us with ULM and Lafayette College. That is only going to get worse if we copy one of the most well known brands in sports. Do you think it would be long before fans start doing the UF alligator chomp? This is the point I was trying to make with the Tigers and Bulldogs remark. Copying someone else's well staked-out ground is not good policy. It won't help us grow or appeal to new fans. All it is going to do is diminish the perception of our beloved school. Sorry, I can't go along with that.
I don't see where Ragin' Cajuns acknowledging the longstanding inhabitants on campus, dilutes The Swamp brand.

I don't see the Spirit leader becoming the identity.

I see it more like adding a supporting character to a TV or Movie series.

I agree. Just say NO to the gators.

So some want to immortalized a spirit leader most have hated from day one. And we keep this hated icon because he is 15 years old

Huh? How would same sex marriage effect locker rooms or Title IV? I think transgender people go to the locker room/restroom that they identify with. Are you planning a switch, Boomer... or are you just curious?

Since Cayenne is for the kids, I say bring him back! They love him. Our mascot is what we make of it. We need consistency and stability to build a brand. Geaux Cayenne!

I do agree we need to change the names of the marching band to the Pride of Louisiana and our football stadium to Louisiana stadium. How nice would the red letters "LOUISIANA" look on our football stadium? It could be seen from the road. It's time for the athletic department to get serious and make an assertive push for the Louisiana brand.

L'Acadien yearbook once sported a BullGator hyde.

This brand reinforcement has a long history at UL.

Well said....in a way that I couldn't, lol. The new mascot would by no means be the center of our brand, just a part of it.

The bull gator mascot would only add to the confusion. Are we the Ragin' Cajuns or Ragin' Gators? The answer is simple for me.

No one ever called us the Ragin Cayennes either. I see no reason we'd be identified as "The Gators" just by having a gator as a mascot. Do the aTm Aggies or the Tenn Vols get called "Dogs" because both have a dog mascot? The gator is an animal with teeth. Cayenne is a vegetable and it was a dumb concept from the git-go. And kids aren't the arbitrators here. Once again, we can place anything whatsoever that's big and fuzzy, that looks like a stuffed animal, in front of kids and they'll love it.

As much as I'm hesitant to go with a Red Gator... it's infinitely better than Cayenne. I'm not concerned about being called "the gators". It will never stick. It just isn't insulting enough... like the "flaming vegetable" is right now. Ragin Cajuns is our greatest idea... ever... and it is taking us places.

But again... the "L" isn't going to do one thing for us but create more issues. "Louisiana" and "UL" are the only athletic nicknames/apparel logo'ing we should stick with.
The "L" is strictly for uniforms, caps, etc. schools like Michigan use the "M" in everything, yet refer to themselves as Michigan and UM. The Old English "L" that Louisville uses is used the same way, and they go by Louisville and U of L. Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, etc. all use the letter but refer to themselves as UA and UF. What better letter for Louisiana than an "L"? Using it means we don't have to tack on the legally needed Lafayette. No one calls them by the single letter and neither would we. Want to get away from UL Lafayette on clothing? Use "L". It won't create any more issues for us than it does for UF, UA, UT, etc. and will not confuse our identity. Why is it that the things that successful programs do won't work for us. There is a reason they are successful. Let's learn from it.

Someone pointed out the last thing I forgot to mention to capture the Louisiana name. Change the name of the Pride of Acadiana to the Pride of Louisiana. Talk about name confusion.

It has bee 15 years since our name change and a marketing nightmare.??Time for some needed changes. The dialogue on this board is good.

The Fabulous Cajun Chicken never caused confusion, and that was as strong of a character as you will ever see.

The only reason the Pepper caused mass confusion was because the pepper logo was inserted into the Ragin' Cajuns logo. So yes a few called UL the peppers. A few.

The Lettermen used to sport a giant "S" and initially I had suggested the keep the S and let is stand for Sports.

Do the Lettermen sport an "L" these days? I don't know, but it would fit tradition.
